Thought For The Day: Take Full Advantage of the Human Form of Life

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

There are 8,400,000 different forms of life in the categories of fish, plants, worms and reptiles, birds, beasts, and humans. Out of these 8,400,000 different forms, this human form is a very rare opportunity to get out of the cycle of birth and death. Therefore those who are actually intelligent take full advantage of this rare opportunity and fully qualify themselves for going back to home, back to Godhead by taking shelter and initiation from the bona fide spiritual master and then being fully obedient to him. This is the simple formula for achieving the highest perfection.

Answers According to Vedic Wisdom

Question: Who is the Demon in the Kali Yuga?

Srila Gurudeva, according to the different yugas or ages there are demons. For example in the Satya Yuga there is Hiranyakasipu, in the Treta Yuga here is Ravana, and in the the Dvapara Yuga there is Duryodhana. So my question is: Who is the demon in our present age, the Kali Yuga?

Sincerely,
Your student, Hari

Answer: Practically Everyone

There were more demons than that in the previous yugas. Srila Prabhupada describes that there was Hiranyakasipu and Hiranyaksa in Satya Yuga, Ravana and Kumbhakarna in the Treta Yuga, and Sisupala and Dantavakra in the Dvapara Yuga. There were very few demons in the previous yugas. But now in the Kali Yuga practically everyone is a demon. Thus it is a very difficult age indeed to be in. But it is also the best of all yugas or ages, because this is the easiest of all ages to attain spiritual perfection. In this age even without undergoing any difficult austerities, if one will simply chant the holy names of the Lord, he can attain complete spiritual perfection and go back home, back to Godhead.

Thought For The Day: Where is My Home?

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

In this material world, which is not our real home, people tend to take the land of their present birth as their actual home, even though they have thousands and millions of births in thousands and millions of places. Thus it clearly seen that their material conception of home is fallacious. Our real home is that place from which we have originally come. That place is the spiritual world. The human form of life is an opportunity given by God for us to get back to our original home by the process of bhakti yoga, dovetailing all of our thoughts, words, and deeds with the pleasure of that Supreme Person, who is the origin of our existence.

Answers According to Vedic Wisdom

Question: Why Do Devotees Suffer from Health Issues?

Recently I have come across a few cases where people were suffering from serious health issues. A few of them are ISKCON members also, who are continuously doing japa and following four regulative principles also. But still they come across these situations in their lives. So my questions to you are:

1. Does Krishna provide safety to His devotees at least as he has promised while speaking Bhagavad-gita.
2. Secondly, I always remains in fear about health of me and my dear ones. How do I overcome these worries of future.

Regards,
Gaurav Chopra

Answer: Devotees are Situated Beyond All Suffeing

In this material world both the devotees and the non-devotees experience birth, death, old age, and disease. The difference is that while the non-devotees remain trapped in this vicious cycle, the devotees are being liberated from it. In other words, for the devotees this will be their last lifetime in this material world. When they leave their present material bodies they will go back to home, back to Godhead. And even while they are undergoing old age, disease, and death their minds are peaceful and happy because they have fully realized that they are not getting sick, old, and dying. It is simply their material body (a garment that they are temporarily wearing) that is going through these changes, not them.

If you and your dear ones will seriously take to the process of Krishna consciousness, you will all realize your identities as eternal spiritual beings who are completely transcendental to birth, death, old age, and disease. Because the Krishna conscious devotee fully realizes that he is not his body, he is fully ecstatic even when his body, not his real self, experiences the inevitable old age, disease, and death.

Dive Deeply into the Ocean of the Name

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

Krishna wants to have a fully reciprocal loving relationship with each of us. Thus He has made Himself fully available to us in the form of His name. Therefore if we will chant His name with complete, total love and devotion, He will fully bestow His unlimited causeless mercy upon us. This is why we should take our chanting of japa very seriously as the most important thing we do every day. In this way if we will always prioritize our japa, we will make very rapid progress on the most sublime pathway back to home, back to Godhead. So what we are we waiting for? Let's chant the highest possible quality japa we can muster every day starting today and henceforward for our entire lives. In this way we will reap the highest benefit.

Question: Requirements for Second Initiation?

Dear Gurudeva,

All Glories to His Divine Grace Srila Prabhupada.
All Glories to You and Gurumata.

Please accept my humble obeisances.

Are there any special instructions regarding my upcoming brahminical initiation?

Your servant,
Dasarath Das

Answer: At Least 16 Rounds of Japa Daily

When I met privately with Srila Prabhupada in his room in 1975 in Atlanta to receive my brahminical initiation he asked me if I was chanting 16 rounds of japa regularly. When I told him that I was, he blessed with 2nd initiation and personally put my new brahmana thread on my body.

So this is the instruction for 2nd initiation, brahminical initiation. Simply you must be fixed in following the vows that you made at the time of your first initiation: to chant 16 rounds of japa daily and to follow the four regulative principes—no illicit sex, no intoxication, no meat-eating, and no gambling.

Thought For The Day: Krishna Consciousness: The World Religion

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

On 6 January 1972 Srila Prabhupada wrote a letter to one of his leading disciples in which he stated, "As much as possible read, chant, and preach. This is our life and soul. If we keep to this simple formula, there is no doubt that we will be victorious wherever we go and very soon we shall become the only religion in the world." So this is our duty to obey these instructions. If we do so, very soon Krishna consciousness will indeed be the world religion and our planet will be blessed with an amazing era of peace and prosperity that will last for thousands of years. Therefore, each of us should diligently engage in chanting Hare Krishna, reading Srila Prabhupada's books, and preaching as much as we possibly can. This will guarantee our perfection and bestow the highest good fortune upon the entire world population.

Question: What is Love?

My Dear Respected Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble obeisances to your lotus feet.
All glories to His Divine Grace Srila Prabhupada.

I got moved in heart reading today's "Thought for the Day" entitled, "Why We Exist." And I cried tears. We exist for love. Please teach me how to love. What is love?

I am hungry for love, such love where I get some peace of love back too, not that I'm just giving and trying and trying and nothing happens. No. I dont want to make anybody hurt. I want that all people wish each other's happiness and well being.

Sincerely,
Kaspars

Answer: To Please Your Beloved

Love means to always think, speak, and act for the pleasure of your beloved. We are hungry for being loved, but we usually forget that we will only experience being loved to the extent that we give love. The secret of feeling totally loved at every minute is to completely surrender ourselves to Guru and Krishna. Full surrender to Guru and Krishna means totally giving all of our love to them. It is in this state of mind that we will feel how we are totally being loved by Guru and Krishna. And we will feel totally, completely satisfied in all ways.

Thought For The Day: Why We Exist

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

Just as the sun emanates its rays all over the universe, Lord Sri Krishna is emanating from Himself an infinite number of living beings all over existence. His purpose of doing so is to facilitate His enjoying an unlimited number of loving relationships. What He desires is to have a deeply intimate loving relationship with each and every one of His beloved expanded parts and parcels. So this is why we exist. We exist simply for loving Krishna. There is no other reason for our existence. Therefore when we love Krishna we enjoy inconceivable sublime happiness at every minute and when we do not love Krishna, there is absolutely no way that we can ever experience any genuine happiness, although we foolishly imagine again and again that we are doing so.

Thought For The Day: Save Ourselves and Save the World

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

Our duty is to save ourselves and save the world. To whatever extent we have succeeded in saving ourselves, to that extent we will be potent for saving the world. Therefore, not only for our own sake but also for the sake of all the lost, fallen souls of this material world, we should be diligently striving for one hundred percent pure bhakti within our hearts at every minute. This will give us the greatest potency for making the entire world Krishna conscious as soon as possible. There is truly no lifestyle more invigorating and fulfiling than this. This is absolutely the greatest bliss. Therefore all thoughtful persons should immediately dedicate themselves for attaining pure devotion as soon as possible as well as for making the whole world Krishna conscious as soon as possible. This will be the most ecstatic, enlivening existence that one could ever imagine. It can be ours right now if we will simply put our consciousness in the right place. Only our lack of faith is holding us back.

Thought For The Day: Krishna Is Always Bestowing His Mercy Upon Us

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

Lord Sri Krishna is blessing us unlimitedly at every minute. We simply must learn the art of appreciating His pure love and always fully reciprocating with His pure love. This will be the perfection of our existence and the complete total destruction of all our distress. So we should not hesitate to fully surrender ourselves unto Lord Sri Krishna right now. That we still continue hesitating to fully surrender to Krishna is our greatest blunder. So it's time for us to wake up, to come to our senses, and to fully absorb ourselves in loving and serving Lord Sri Krishna in all times, places, and circumstances for now and for all of eternity.

Thought For The Day: Returning to the Land of Perfect Love

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

Why suffer here unnecessarily in this rotten material world when we can return to our original, all-blissful home in the spiritual sky? Even though we most foolishly abandoned our eternal home in Lord Sri Krishna's abode in a vain attempt to try to enjoy separately from Him, Krishna is very kindly bestowing His unlimited mercy upon us to facilitate our coming back to Him. Let us all now take full advantage of His mercy and make our lives perfect. This is really the only sensible thing that we can do. Anything else is sheer madness.

Thought For The Day: Krishna's Devotee is Always Enthusiastic

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

In his purport to Bhagavad-gita 18.26 Srila Prabhupada wonderfully describes how Krishna's devotee is always enthusiastic:

"A person in Krsna consciousness is always transcendental to the material modes of nature. He has no expectations for the result of the work entrusted to him, because he is above false ego and pride. Still, he is always enthusiastic till the completion of such work. He does not worry about the distress undertaken; he is always enthusiastic. He does not care for success or failure; he is equal in both distress and happiness. Such a worker is situated in the mode of goodness."

So now we have to train ourselves to always be like this. This will be the perfection of our existence.

Complaint: Krishna is Not Correct

It is not correct for Lord Krishna to ask me to make choices: “Do you want Me, or do you want to pursue your passions of witchcraft, wicca, sorcery, and occult. Yes, this very enticing, but you cant have both."

Aroh

Answer: Krishna is Perfectly Facilitating You

Krishna is kindly giving you the choice whether or not you would to be His devotee. The greatest magic is to deliver the souls who are suffering in the cycle of birth and death back to their original home in the spiritual world by preaching pure bhakti. If you want to engage in this sort of magic, that is very nice. If so, you can be both a devotee and a magician at the same time. Otherwise a devotee has no interest in the magic of manipulating the material energy for material sense gratificatory purposes because he finds this to be a complete waste of his time and energy.

Thought For The Day: Krishna's Devotee Begs to Be Saved

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

When our most beloved ISKCON Founder-Acarya, His Divine A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, who is my most beloved spiritual master, wrote a Vyasa Puja homage to his spiritual master he prayed, "Save me a fallen, Your Divine Grace." In this way Srila Prabhupada, even though a fully liberated soul, is teaching us struggling, neophyte devotees what our mood should be. We should always as much as possible be praying to Lord Sri Krishna and to our spiritual master to save us from our fallen position of being caught up in the cycle of birth and death here in this material world due to our stubbornly holding onto our so many material desires. If we are always in this "save me a fallen" mood, we will always be solidly fixed on the transcendental platform in ecstatic Krishna consciousness.

Question: How Can I Help My Friend?

This question is on behalf of my dear friend. She is having a great problem. She is an initiated married devotee who is not able to complete her chanting. Her mind is wandering in attachments with other males. Even after spiritual knowledge understanding still not able to cope up with these material entanglements. She feels ashamed of herself and needs regular prayers from Vaisnavas to overcome these situations. She wants to progress in her chanting and devotional activities. How can I help her? Please reply.

Thanking you.
Your humble servant

Answer: Mind Should Wander to the Supreme Male

The prayers for her deliverance are already there. What she requires is training. Instead of meditating on this male or that male she should instead allow her mind to wander to the Supreme Male, Lord Sri Krishna. This is her mind’s natural proclivity. Instead of remaining artificially in material consciousness she should to return to her original natural Krishna consciousness. If she will simply regularly call out to her spiritual master and Lord Sri Krishna begging them to save her from her fallen position, she will become 100% successful in regaining her natural spiritual life. In that purified state she will relish unlimited happiness at every minute. Instead of being attracted to blood and flesh she should again become attracted to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Who is the source of all existence. Only in this way will her mind become peaceful and satisfied.

The Sublime Value of Devotee Association

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

In this world there is nothing more sublime, pure, and wonderful than the association of Krishna's devotees because such association, if taken in the proper manner, bestows the highest benediction upon the conditioned living beings who are currently caught up in the cycle of repeated birth and death. Such association liberates us from all suffering and delivers us back to our original identities that we once had in the spiritual world before we fell down into this rotten material existence. Therefore we must always take advantage of this greatest of all blessings, the association of Lord Sri Krishna's devotees. This will enable us to quickly and easily attain the supreme perfection of going back to home, back to Godhead.

Answers According to Vedic Knowledge

Question: Should We Give Up Sex?

My wife and I have lost interest in material desires like big car, big house or luxury lifestyle etc, which seems absolutely fine. We are very happy about it that Krishna is giving His mercy. So now we both want to progress our life towards Krishna and whatever we earn that should be utilized to satisfy Krishna's senses.

However, now that we both have also lost interest in physical desire for each other as well, we both feel that we are losing something. Sometimes one of us wants sex but at that time the other does not feel the same. So we are both feeling a little frustrated.

I know that as per the Bhagavad-gita if sex is being used for procreation it is divine. So should we ignore it completely and only concentrate on serving Krishna at this point of life since we are desiring now to be purely fixed in Krishna consciousness?

Thanks and Regards,
(Name withheld for confidentiality)

Answer: Non-Procreational Sex Must Be Given Up

That is first class that you are both becoming free now from sex desire. This is a great victory. In the spiritual world there are husbands and wives who are unbelievably beautiful, but yet they are not attracted to each other. They are only attracted to Krishna. Married couples who are fixed in Krishna consciousness do not engage in sex at all unless they are trying to have a child. They are not interested even in hugging and kissing, what to speak of having sex.

So you should not feel frustrated. Srila Prabhupada explains that if we tolerate the sex itch instead of indulging in sex, the itch will go away. Conversely if we give in to the itch, it will keep bothering us for our entire life. It has been seen that even a dying man can be sexually inclined.

However, since sex is divine if it is used in producing Krishna conscious children, if you and your wife desire more children, you may continue having sex while at the same time you are cultivating your Krishna consciousness. The system for Krishna conscious householders who want to have children is to first take permission from the spiritual master to try for a child. If the permission is granted, then once a month five days after the wife's menstrual cycle the husband and wife both chant at least 50 rounds of Hare Krishna japa mala and then engage in sex. And if the wife is pregnant, then there is no more sex life until the child is born and at least six months old. Children conceived in this way are very special, sent by Krishna.

So the conclusion is that you should both feel happy that you are going beyond bodily consciousness by coming to the liberated platform of Krishna consciousness. And if you want to have more children to raise them in Krishna consciousness so that they can be liberated from the cycle of birth and death, this an option that will also liberate your from sex desire.

The current world atmosphere is becoming more and more godless with every passing year. This is why our modern day society is facing more and more horrific, nightmarish, disastrous situations. Question: What Does Enjoy with Krishna Mean?

We hear often that one should not enjoy separately from Krishna. So what does it mean to enjoy with Krishna?

Rupa Manjari Devi Dasi

Answer: It Means to Give Service to Krishna

Srila Prabhupada has very nicely answered your nice question as follows:

"Real happiness is to enjoy with Rama, enjoy with Krishna. What is that enjoyment? Krishna is the master. He orders, and you perform the order. That is enjoyment. Master and servant. Not as master, as servant. That is our enjoyment. Just like a faithful servant and a rich master, the reciprocation is service. The master is also satisfied by the service of the servant, and the servant is also satisfied, giving service to the master. This is our relation."--(from a Bhagavad-gita lecture given in Mumbai, India on 10 April 1974)

Thought For The Day: Disgruntled Youth Kills 17 at Florida High School

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

The American nation is shocked that on 14 February 2018 at a high school in Parkland, Florida a disgruntled former student using an AR-15 rifle killed 17 people and wounded 16. Government officials are saying that this was caused by insufficient laws. But we students of the Vedic literature know that this is not the real underlying cause. What goes around comes around. When a school is turned into a slaughterhouse it is a karmic reaction for our regularly sending cows to the slaughterhouse. The way it works is this: When we send our mother, the cow, to the slaughterhouse, we will also be forced by law of karma to send our children to a place that becomes a slaughterhouse. Therefore the real solution for such violence is that we must stop sending the cows to the slaughterhouse.

Answers According to Vedic Knowledge

Question: How to Surrender to Krishna?

My Dear Respected Gurudeva,

Please accept my dandavat to your lotus feet.
All glories to His Divine Grace Srila Prabhupada.

I am reading the book "The Second Chance" where the glories of the holy name are on every page. Srila Prabhupada repeatedly states Krishna's wish is that we give up all so-called religions and simply surrender to Him. This sounds simple. But then how I do really surrender to Him? I pray every day to Lord Krishna, "Lord please accept me as Yours and show me how I can surrender more."

Sincerely,
Kaspars

Answer: Follow the Spiritual Master's Instructions

From: ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

My Dear Kaspars,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Krishna very nicely answers your question in the Bhagavad-gita:

tad viddhi pranipatena
pariprasnena sevaya
upadeksyanti te jñanam
jñaninas tattva-darsinah

"Just try to learn the truth by approaching a spiritual master. Inquire from him submissively and render service unto him. The self-realized souls can impart knowledge unto you because they have seen the truth.”

So you will become perfect in surrender to Krishna by fully surrendering yourself to following the instructions of Krishna’s representative, the bona fide spiritual master.

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.

Your ever well-wisher,

Thought For The Day: Shiva Ratri, the Appearance Day of Lord Shiva

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

Today, 14 February 2018, is Shiva Ratri, the appearance day of Lord Shiva. Srila Prabhupada describes the relationship between Lord Krishna and Lord Shiva as follows:

"Lord Krishna is also known as avatari, which means, 'one from whom all the incarnations emanate.' In Bhagavad-gita (10.8) Lord Krishna says, aham sarvasya prabhavo mattah sarvam pravartate: 'I am the source of all spiritual and material worlds. Everything emanates from Me.' Thus Lord Krishna is the origin of everyone's appearance. As far as this material world is concerned, Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva are all emanations from Krishna. These three incarnations of Krishna are called guna-avataras. The material world is governed by three material modes of nature, and Lord Vishnu, Lord Brahma and Lord Shiva respectively take charge of the modes of goodness, passion and ignorance."

Lord Shiva is described as follows in the Brahma-samhita, Chapter 5, Text 45:

ksiram yatha dadhi vikara-visesa-yogat
sañjayate na hi tatah prthag asti hetoh
yah sambhutam api tatha samupaiti karyad
govindam adi-purusam tam aham bhajami

"Just as milk is transformed into curd by the action of acids, but yet the effect curd is neither same as, nor different from, its cause, viz., milk, so I adore the primeval Lord Govinda of whom the state of Sambhu, Lord Siva, is a transformation for the performance of the work of destruction."

Since Lord Shiva is known as the topmost of Vaisnavas, devotees of Lord Krishna, we pray to him on this auspicious day of his appearance that he blesses us with full absorption in service to our most beloved Lord Sri Krishna.

Question: Why No Worship of Lord Shiva?

Hare Krishna, Dear His Grace Sriman Sankarshan Das Adhikari.

All Glories to Srila Prabhupada.
All Glories to Sri Guru and Gauranga.

nama om visnu-padaya krsna-presthaya bhu-tale
srimate sankarsana-dasadhikarin iti namine

namo prabhupadanuga prema-murti krpatmane
gauradesa-vikasartha-uttama-bhakti-varsine

Hare Krishna, Srila Gurudeva. As we know and as mentioned by Srila Prabhupada, Lord Shiva is considered the greatest and foremost devotee of Lord Krishna. If that is the case, why there is no picture or murti of Lord Siva in ISKCON temples? With my limited knowledge about Krishna Consciousness, I have understood that we have to offer our utmost respect to the devotees of Lord Krishna, especially the great and advanced devotees, but hardly we can find the picture or murti (deity form) of Lord Shiva, Krishna's greatest devotee, in ISKCON temples. Why is that so?

Thank you, Srila Gurudeva.

Sivarooban

Answer: He is Automatically Worshipped

When we water the root of the tree all the leaves and branches are nourished. Similarly when we give our loving service to Lord Krishna, who is the root cause of existence, we automatically give our loving service to all of the great and advanced devotees. Thus there is no need to worship Lord Shiva separately. He is automatically loved, worshipped, and served simply by our giving our loving service to Krishna.

Thought For The Day: The Highest Realization

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

Srila Prabhupada states that our real mission is to deliver the world by preaching the message of Krishna to others, but that the highest realization is to save oneself. This makes perfect sense because if you haven't saved yourself, how can you save others? You can only give Krishna to others if you have Krishna yourself. Therefore the foundation of our world deliverance mission is to awaken Krishna consciousness within our own hearts. If we do not do so, there is no question of a world deliverance mission. Our mission can only be successful to the extent that we have awakened Krishna consciousness within our own hearts. So this must always be our first focus.

Thought For The Day: We Need Your Help for Delivering the World

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

Srila Prabhupada has given us the order to deliver the world by making everyone Krishna conscious, an incredibly herculean task no doubt. We cannot do this alone. That would be impossible. But if we can get sufficient help, it is possible that we make a significant impact on global history for delivering countless millions of people from being forced to go down to the animal kingdom in their next lives due to their unrestricted indulgence in sinful activities. Therefore we are approaching you humbly with folded palms begging you to please assist us in our world deliverance mission.

There are four ways that you can be of assistance. The first way is to volunteer your time (either full time or part time) to work alongside us in our various missionary activities such as temple service, book distribution, and public chanting.

The second way is give financial support for funding our missionary activities. Ideally those who would like to serve in this way should join our monthly donor program. If you are interested in this option, please write me at: sda@backtohome.com for more details. This is a most essential program. (If you shop on Amazon.com, you can also give financial support to our mission by doing your Amazon shopping through this link.)

The third way is that you can engage your intelligence in serving Krishna by sharing with us your ideas of how we can expand this movement more and more. And the fourth method is that you engage your words in Krishna's service by telling as many people as possible about Krishna consciousness.

So kindly do whatever you can now to help us make the world Krishna conscious and Lord Sri Krishna will surely bless you.

Answers According to Vedic Knowledge

Question: How to Receive the Mahamantra?

Good day.

May I ask you a couple of questions?

Where may I find the verse that states that one must be a devotee of a devotee to be a devotee of Krishna? I believe this is what Jesus meant when he told his disciples that he was the only way to God.

I have read that one must receive the mahamantra from a spiritual master for it to have significant effect. Is this true? And how would I go about doing that?

I am chanting when I can, and I have been reading Bhagavad-gita As It Is. I first read just the text and am now reading the text and commentary. I have never gambled, having grown up in Las Vegas, and since I started chanting I just don’t have any interest in meat at all. I intellectualize things much too greatly, and am very materially entrenched. I also have a very bad track record for sticking with something spiritually, but am at the point where I realize that I cannot attain happiness in this world, and so don’t really want to come back. Yet I don’t really know what the alternative is like and therefore am a bit frightened of that.

I also seem to have music in common with you. We have a Christian pop band, and I write our music and my wife our lyrics. Our lyrics are non-sectarian and do not contradict anything I know of Krishna consciousness. We are obviously not evangelicals in any way. I have become convinced that Krishna is the father Jesus talks of, and the more I know the more I see Jesus was a devotee of Krishna. I’m not sure those are exactly the right words.

Anyway, I will appreciate your taking the time to answer the above questions for me.

Sincerely,
Rand

Answer: Through the Process of Initiation

Lord Krishna states in the Adi Purana:

ye me bhakta-janah partha na me bhaktas ca te janah
mad bhaktanam ca ye bhaktas te me bhaktatamah matah

"My dear Arjuna, those who say they are My devotees are not My devotees, but those who claim to be devotees of My devotees are actually My devotees."

The full potency of the Hare Krishna mantra is transmitted to the student at the time he takes initiation from the bona fide spiritual master and thus formally becomes the disciple of the spiritual master. To become initiated one must be solidly fixed in chanting at least 16 rounds a day of the Hare Krishna mantra on japa mala beads along with the strict avoidance of illicit sex, meat eating, intoxication, and gambling.

If you will take to this pathway of Krishna consciousness fully under our guidance, you will be liberated from all the illusions of material existence and will become fully qualified to enter the spiritual world at the time of quitting your present material body.

You are right that Krishna is the father of Jesus and that Jesus is a devotee of Krishna. Between the ages of 12 and 30 Jesus went to India and immersed himself fully in Krishna consciousness. In the book of John, Jesus says that he has many things to say, but that those to whom he was preaching were not ready yet to hear these things. Because of the mentality of the people he was preaching to Jesus was only able to teach the most basic tenets of spirituality. And even for that he was nailed to a cross. But now we are most fortunate that by the mercy of Srila Prabhupada we are able to understand and teach the science of God in full.

Music is a powerful communication tool. If you can become solidly fixed in Krishna consciousness as an initiated disciple and produce Krishna conscious music, this will have a profound uplifting impact on the global consciousness.

Mad After God, the Highest Spiritual Ecstasy

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

Srila Prabhupada very wonderfully explains as follows the highest ecstasy, to be mad after God:

"So the Bhagavad-gita is the science of how to know God. The preliminary science. If you want to know more, then read Srimad Bhagavatam. And if you are in intense love with God, read Caitanya-caritamrita — how your love for God can be still more intensified. That is Caitanya-caritamrita. So Bhagavad-gita is the preliminary book: to understand God and surrender. And from the surrendering point, further progress — that is Srimad Bhagavatam. And when the love is intense, to make it more intensified — that is Caitanya-caritamrita. Caitanya Mahaprabhu was mad after God. He cried, sunyayitam jagat sarvam govinda virahena me: 'I find everything vacant without Krishna.' That is the supreme ecstasy. So these things cannot happen without love. If you love somebody and he's not there, you find everything vacant. So Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu felt this way about Krishna — lover and beloved. Sunyayitam jagat sarvam govinda virahena me: 'I see everything vacant without Govinda.' That is the supreme stage of love."

If we sincerely always stick to this pathway, accepting the orders of our spiritual master as our very life and soul, we are guaranteed to be elevated very soon to this highest perfectional stage of being mad after God.

Prayer: To Assist You Life After Life

Dear Srila Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories unto your divine grace.

I pray to assist you life after life. You are my inspiration. You have mercifully saved me, and I want to bring the whole world at your lotus feet so that they may be saved.

Your servant,
Mahabhagavat Das

Reply: The Perfectional Mood for the Disciple

Thank you very much. You have expressed the perfectional mood for a disciple. Without caring for his own liberation from the cycle of birth he is willing to perpetually assist his spiritual master in delivering the fallen souls of this world back to home, back to Godhead. In this connection Srila Prabhupada explains as follows in his purport to Srimad Bhagavatam 3.29.13 this mood of pure devotion as taught by Lord Caitanya:

"Lord Caitanya teaches us how to execute pure devotional service out of spontaneous love for the Supreme Personality of Godhead. In the Siksastaka, He prays to the Lord: 'O Lord, I do not wish to gain from You any wealth, nor do I wish to have a beautiful wife, nor do I wish to have many followers. All I want from You is that in life after life I may remain a pure devotee at Your lotus feet.' There is a similarity between the prayers of Lord Caitanya and the statements of Srimad-Bhagavatam. Lord Caitanya prays, 'in life after life,' indicating that a devotee does not even desire the cessation of birth and death. The yogis and empiric philosophers desire cessation of the process of birth and death, but a devotee is satisfied to remain even in this material world and execute devotional service."

So kindly continue serving your spiritual master and Lord Sri Krishna in this mood of total surrender. This will be the perfection of your existence. This mood is as good as being back to home, back to Godhead even while being here in this miserable material world.

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.

Thought For The Day: When the Going Gets Tough, the Tough Get Going

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

Things are not always smooth and easy here in this material world. Sometimes we face very, very difficult situations. While such times are psychologically devastating for materialists, they are the greatest window of opportunity for the spiritualists. This is so because the spiritualists see the loving hand of Krishna blessing them in all situations here in this material dimension, both when times are good and when times are bad. In this way, for the spiritualist there is never any situation when things are truly bad. He simply fully utilizes each and every situation he finds himself in to advance himself further and further on the path of spiritual realization so that very soon he can become fully awakened by attaining the perfectional stage of pure love of God. Isn't this what we should all be living for at every minute?

Question: How to Apply Bhagavad-gita in Management?

Dear Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble obeisance and would like to thank you for this Ultimate Self Realization course. I have been following your answers and the same has been helpful in my spiritual life. Presently I have got admission to PhD course in a university and my guide has asked me to submit a few topics with reference to the application of the Bhagavad-gita in management. I have been regularly following you for last few years and hope to get an early reply.

All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

Hare Krishna!

Rukmininath Krishna Das

Answer: Manage for the pleasure of Krishna

Bhagavad-gita teaches the perfection of management and all other processes by showing us how to utilize them for the pleasure of Krishna, who is the root of all existence. The principle is that when we water the root of the tree all the leaves and branches are nourished. Similarly when we manage things for the pleasure of Krishna we act in a way that is beneficial for all living beings throughout all of existence. In short, acting according to the Bhagavad-gita by engaging everything in the service of Krishna is the gateway to all-auspiciousness.

Thought For The Day: Grateful When Someone Points Out Your Mistake

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

The path of spiritual awakening has four stages:

1. Unconscious incompetence
2. Conscious incompetence
3. Conscious competence
4. Unconscious competence

In the beginning we are doing so many things wrong, making so many mistakes, but we don't realize it. We are blind to our mistakes. Once we take seriously to the path of spiritual awakening we are blessed by the spiritual master and the senior devotees by being corrected again and again for our mistakes. In this way we become conscious of our incompetence. And in this way we become more and more humble. This is very good for us. By taking very seriously the corrections received, we gradually become more and more free from making mistakes and we achieve the stage of conscious competence. The final stage, the perfectional stage, is when we attain absolutely pure love of God and we spontaneously are doing everything perfectly. At this stage of unconscious competence, we are automatically always doing the right thing. So the next time someone points out one of your faults or mistakes, instead of being discouraged, you should be grateful that they are helping you to advance along the sublime pathway of spiritual perfection.

Thought For The Day: Global Re-Education Initiative

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

Remaining in material consciousness means torturing yourself. And there is not much more to be said in the connection. Why would someone choose to experience temporality, ignorance, and misery when they could instead be tasting eternality, bliss, and knowledge? The only reason this is going on all over the world with practically the entire human population is due to miseducation. People have been trained in the wrong way. Therefore our program is to re-educate the entire human population so that everyone can experience genuine peace and happiness at every minute. Kindly fully dedicate your life for assisting us in our global re-education initiative. If you do so, this will immediately liberate you from material consciousness and situate you solidly on the transcendental platform.

Answers According to Vedic Knowledge

Question: How Envy Manifests in Spiritual World?

Srila Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and all glories to you.

How is it that a living entity blissful in the eternal pastimes of Krishna in the Goloka becomes envious and thinks of enjoying separately from Krishna and falls down into the material world? How can envy manifest in the spiritual world? Since anger, envy, greed, and lust are manifest only in material world, I am confused. Please explain.

Your insignificant servant
Mukunda das

Answer: Envy Does Not Manifest in Spiritual World

Envy does not exist in the spiritual world. Therefore if envy manifests in the heart of a living being, he is immediately in the material world because that is the only world where envy exists. This manifestation of envy is a misuse of the living being’s free will. This free will must exist because otherwise we are simply robots and we cannot truly love Krishna. Robots are only machines. They are not persons. And since free will must necessarily exist for us to be able to love Krishna, there is always the possibility, although extremely remote, that it can be misused. In those extremely rare cases when it is misused there is a system designed by Krishna to help the fallen souls realize their mistake and voluntarily return to their original position of spontaneous loving service to Him. Is this clear?

Thought For The Day: Attracting the Whole World to Krishna

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

Our mission is to attract the whole world to Krishna because this will solve all the problems of the world making everyone in every corner of the world unlimitedly happy. Factually, whether they know it or not, everyone is already attracted to Krishna. It is just at the present time everyone here in this material world is manifesting their attraction by running madly after Krishna's shadow, the material energy. If someone were to offer us a delicious meal and the shadow of delicious meal, which would we prefer to accept? The choice is obvious. We would accept the delicious meal. So now through the process of education we have to guide the people how to factually experience the greatest pleasure of Krishna directly instead of His shadow, this material energy. If we are fully convinced and determined to enlighten them, we will be successful in our mission of attracting the whole world to Krishna. So now taking complete shelter of Guru and Krishna we must simply act intelligently and enthusiastically to succeed in our mission.

Question: Self-Interest or Selflessness?

Hare Krishna Srila Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble obeisances unto your lotus feet.

This is the first time I am writing to you and I feel very fortunate to have your invaluable association through this way.

Please help me to understand what is self-interest and what is being selfless. Please advise what is more important in devotional service, One's self-interest or to be selfless?

Your aspiring servant,
Thanks and regards,

Ashish Suresh

Answer: True Self-Interest is Selflessness

I am very happy that you have now written to me. I want to guide you how to attain your true self-interest, which is perfect selflessness. In other words, we attain perfection when our interest perfectly coincides with the interest of the Lord. This means that our real self-interest is to become Krishna conscious. This is attained by following Krishna’s instructions as stated in the Bhagavad-gita as it is.

Thought For The Day: The Danger of Impersonalism

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

The impersonalists accept that God exists. But they say that He has no form, no personality, no qualities, and no activities. He is simply the oneness and He is not really He. He is really just "it." Such so-called acceptance of God is useless because you cannot have a loving relationship with such a God. The ultimate conclusion of the impersonalists is that we are all God. But since God means the Supreme, who is one without a second, if we are all God then factually there is no God. Thus impersonalism is simply covered atheism.

Thought For The Day: Understanding Why God Must Exist

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

Many people nowadays foolishly adopt atheism because they were not taught about God in a logical, scientific way. The beauty of the Krishna conscious philosophy is that we scientifically, logically understand why God must exist, as the original source of all existence. Since it is scientifically observable that nothing comes from nothing and that everything comes from something, there must therefore be an original something from which everything has come. And since the original source must have within itself everything which it is able to emanate, and since so many persons have come from that original source, that original source must necessarily possess personality and hence be a person.

Congratulations! If you have followed my line of logic, you have just scientifically understood God.

Question: How to Serve the Devotees?

Since I heard it explained that the basic principle of spiritual life is to serve the devotees, I need to know what this means. If I knew what they wanted I could then serve them.

The solution is very easy. You simply ask the devotees what service they need. If you were to ask me, I would tell you to become Krishna’s pure devotee and help us make the world Krishna conscious.

Thought For The Day: Solution for Devastating Drought in Capetown

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

At the present moment there is a devastating drought in Capetown, South Africa, a city of four million people. The lack of rainfall is so acute that their water reservoir is on the verge of completely drying up. Officials there are predicting that by April 16 of this year (2018) the water taps throughout the entire city will be turned off. There will be no more water. They are completely perplexed what to do about this situation because they factually have no solution.

We, the followers of the process of Krishna consciousness, however, are not perplexed by this situation because we know exactly what is the cause of this drought and what is the solution for this drought. In this connection our beloved Founder/Acarya, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada writes as follows in his purport to Srimad Bhagavatam, Ninth Canto, Chapter 1, Text 17:

"In these days of drought, people can gain relief from scarcity of rain and food by the simple method of the Hare Krishna yajña. Indeed, this can relieve all of human society. At present there are droughts throughout Europe and America, and people are suffering, but if people take this Krishna consciousness movement seriously, if they stop their sinful activities and chant the Hare Krishna maha-mantra, all their problems will be solved without difficulty."

In connection with this severe drought in Capetown it should be noted that in 1972, the South Indian state of Andhra Pradesh was stricken by a severe drought that affected millions. Hoping that the International Society for Krishna Consciousness would provide assistance, T. L. Katidia, Secretary of the Andhra Pradesh Relief Fund Committee, wrote to Srila Prabhupada. Srila Prabhupada responded with this surprising and edifying letter.

Letter from T.L. Katidia:

Revered Swamiji,

The residents of the twin cities are happy to have this opportunity to meet you and your esteemed followers. You may be aware that due to inadequate rainfall during the last two years and its complete failure this year, more than half of our state [Andhra Pradesh, a state in southern India] is in the grip of a serious drought. With a view to supplement governmental efforts to combat this evil, a Central Voluntary Organization of citizens drawn from various walks of life has been set up. The members of this organization surveyed the areas affected by drought. The situation is pathetic. There are villages where drinking water is not available for miles. Due to scarcity of fodder, the cattle owners are parting with their cattle for a nominal price. Many of the stray cattle are dying away due to unavailability of fodder and water. The food problem is also very serious. Due to high prices of food grains on the open market, purchase of grains at market prices is beyond the reach of poor villagers, with the result that at least five to six million people are hardly having one meal a day. There are many who are on the verge of starvation. The entire situation is most pathetic and heartrending.

We therefore appeal to your revered self to consider how your Society could best come to the rescue of these millions of souls who are in unimaginable distress. The Committee would like to suggest that members of your Society appeal to the bhaktas [devotees] attending your discourses to contribute their mite to the Andhra Pradesh Relief Fund.

The Committee is prepared to send some of its representatives along with members of your Society wherever you wish to distribute prasada to the hungry millions in the state.

As manava-seva is madhava-seva ["Service to man is service to God"], the Committee is confident that even a little effort by your gracious Society will go a long way in mitigating the sufferings of hundreds and thousands of people.

Yours ever in the service of the Lord,
T. L. Katidia, Secretary
Andhra Pradesh Relief fund Committee
Hyderabad, India

Reply from Srila Prabhupada:

My dear Mr. Katidia,

Please accept my greetings. With reference to your letter and your personal interview, I beg to inform you that without pleasing the Supreme Personality of Godhead, no one can become happy. Unfortunately people do not know who God is and how to make Him happy. Our Krishna consciousness movement is therefore meant to present the Supreme Personality of Godhead directly to the people. As stated in the Srimad-Bhagavatam, Seventh Canto, Sixth Chapter:

tutse ca tatra kim alabhyam ananta adye
kim tair guna-vyatikarad iha ye sva-siddhah

The idea stated in this verse is that by pleasing the Supreme Personality of Godhead, we please everyone, and there is no question of scarcity. Because people do not know this secret of success, they are making their own independent plans to be happy. However, it is not possible to achieve happiness in this way. On your letterhead I find many important men in this country who are interested in relieving the sufferings of the people, but they should know for certain that without pleasing the Supreme Personality of Godhead all their attempts will be futile. A diseased man cannot live simply on the strength of the help of an expert physician and medicine. If this were so, then no rich man would ever die. One must be favored by Krishna the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

Therefore if you want to perform relief work simply by collecting funds, I think that it will not be successful. You have to please the supreme authority, and that is the way to success. For example, due to the performance of sankirtana here, the rain has begun to fall after a drought of two years. The last time we performed a Hare Krishna Festival in Delhi, there was imminent danger of Pakistan's declaring war, and when a newspaper man approached me for my opinion, I said there must be fighting because the other party was aggressive. However, because of our sankirtana movement, India emerged victorious. Similarly, when we held a festival in Calcutta, the Naxalite [Communist] movement stopped. These are facts. Through the sankirtana movement we can not only get all facilities for living, but also at the end can go back home, back to Godhead. Those who are of a demoniac nature cannot understand this, but it is a fact.

I therefore request you, as leading members of society, to join this movement. There is no loss on anyone's part for chanting the Hare Krishna mantra, but the gain is great. According to Bhagavad-gita (3.21), what is accepted by leading men is also accepted by common men:

yad yad acarati sresthas
tat tad evetaro janah
sa yat pramanam kurute
lokas tad anuvartate

"Whatever action a great man performs, common men follow in his footsteps. And whatever standards he sets by exemplary acts, all the world pursues."

The sankirtana movement of Krishna consciousness is very important. Therefore, through you I wish to appeal to all the leading men of India to accept this movement very seriously and give us all facility to spread this movement throughout the world. Then there will be a very happy condition, not only in India but all over the world.

Hoping this will meet you in good health,
Your ever well-wisher,
A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami

We therefore advise the government leaders of Capetown, South Africa that they should immediately organize regularly daily sankirtana festivals throughout their city every evening. Organize in such a way that all of the four million people of Capetown participate every day in singing and dancing the glories of God for at least one hour. If this is done, God will surely send the rains and this devastating drought will be ended.

Thought For The Day: What Could Be More Amazing Than This?

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

It is most wonderfully stated in the Sri Caitanya-caritamrita, Antya Lila, Chapter 4, Text 192:

diksa-kale bhakta kare atma-samarpana
sei-kale krsna tare kare atma-sama

“At the time of initiation, when a devotee fully surrenders unto the service of the Lord, Krishna accepts him to be as good as Himself."

What could be more amazing than this, to be accepted by God to be as good as His very self? This is the unlimitedly auspicious benefit of taking initiation and fully surrendering oneself unto Krishna. There is no greater achievement than this! Those who do not take initiation and those who take initiation superficially, not fully surrendering to Krishna, will have no experience of this.

Answers According to Vedic Knowledge

Question: Am I On the Right Path?

My dear Srila Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble obeisances,
All glories to you Srila Gurudeva and Srimati Gurumataji.

How do I convince myself humbly that I am qualitatively one with the Lord? Is it sufficient to totally surrender to the Lord and the spiritual master and always be Krishna Conscious as an eternal servant? Presently I am not looking for bliss. Are my thoughts are okay? Am I on the right path?

Your servant,
Srivatsa Das

Answer: Yes

We are qualitatively one with God because we all possess the same quality of being eternal. If you fully surrender to Krishna as His eternal servant through the via medium of the bona fide spiritual master, you will attain complete, total spiritual perfection.

Those who are advanced in Krishna consciousness do not look for bliss. They are simply concerned with how they can give bliss to Krishna by always serving Him with love at every minute.

So you are definitely on the right path. Please continue cultivating your Krishna consciousness as you are now doing now and surely Krishna will bless you with the full awakening of pure love for Him within you heart.

Thought For The Day: Two Million Miler for Krishna

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

Our mission is to bring peace, happiness, and prosperity to the entire human civilization by making the whole world Krishna conscious as soon as possible. For this purpose for many, many years now we have been circling the globe trying to do our best to awaken everyone to their factual spiritual identities as the eternal servants of Krishna. We have been traveling so much that American Airlines has now given me the status of "Two Million Miler" since I have now flown over two million miles. We are greatly encouraged in our world deliverance mission because Srila Prabhupada explains in his purport of Bhagavad-gita 14.7 that even if the majority of the people are not Krishna conscious, if only a percentage of the population develops Krishna consciousness, then there can be peace and prosperity all over the world. This is good news indeed because even if we can make only a small percentage of the world population Krishna conscious, this can potentially completely revolutionize human history, sparking off the greatest paradigm shift the world has ever known. Therefore we will continue traveling and preaching all over the world as long as long as our aging 70-year-old body can tolerate the rigors of traveling.

Answers According to Vedic Knowledge

Question: Beneficial to Remember Time in Hell?

It is a well known fact that if we do good deeds, we acquire punya (pious results). And if we do bad deeds, we acquire papa (sinful results). After death, we can be either sent to naraka (hell) to get punished for our papa or sent to svarga (heaven) to enjoy the fruits of our punya. But after that, we are sent back to earth again and again until the said soul attains moksha (liberation) and attains Vaikuntha (the spiritual world). There we truly enjoy.

My question is that if we were to remember the pains and punishments from our previous visits to naraka, wouldn't it be a guideline for us to learn from our previous experiences in naraka so that it would be easier for us to never fall prey to the temptations of sin and thereby work towards attaining moksha?

Looking forward to your enlightening response.

Your servant,
Avinash G.

Answer: Debilitating Post Trauma Stress Disorder

The memories of our time in hell would be so traumatic that we would not be able to do anything peacefully. In other words, we would be suffering from a most severe, debilitating case of post trauma stress disorder that would make us totally dysfunctional. Therefore Krishna has kindly given us forgetfulness of that extremely nightmarish hellish existence so that we can peacefully chant His holy names and revive our dormant love for Him.

Thought For The Day: Do Not Waste a Single Moment

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

Every moment of time is more valuable than millions and billions of dollars. A huge sum of money can be lost and regained. But a moment of lost time can never be recovered. Therefore we must perfectly manage our time so that not even a moment of our unlimitedly valuable time is wasted. We must scrutinizingly see that absolutely every nanosecond is perfectly utilized in the service of our most beloved Lord Sri Krishna. In this way we will reap unlimited benefit at every minute and quickly become fully qualified to regain our original identities in the transcendental pastimes of Krishna in that most wondrous spiritual sky.

Answers According to Vedic Knowledge

Question: How to Present Our Philosophy?

Hare Krishna Srila Gurudeva,

I have been reading in your "Thought for the Day" "Answers According to Vedic Knowledge." I have noticed that you provide very appealing answers to even the most challenging questions posed by inquirer. On the other hand I have analyzed my situation that I tend to get into a loop of arguments whenever I tend to present it to a new person.

My dear master, I definitely lack necessary aptitude or knowledge to present the philosophy of Krsna to the people in general. I humbly offer my obeisance at your lotus feet and inquire from Your Grace, how should I present this philosophy so that people in general will accept it wholeheartedly?

Your servant,
Sadhu Bhusana Das

Answer: With Conviction

If you will simply tell them with conviction that Krishna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, your preaching will be perfect, and Krishna from within will guide how to tell them this in such a way that they will be convinced. Just as you were convinced by someone that Krishna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Krishna will empower you to convince others if you will simply do your duty of propagating this message.
