Shyamasundar's Amazing Book

My dear godbrother, Sriman Shyamasundar Das Adhikari who had many years of personal association with Srila Prabhupada in the early days of ISKCON has written a wonderful book "Chasing Rhinos With the Swami." It is described as follows:

A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada changed the world. When he came to America from India in 1965, few Westerners knew the deep spiritual truths behind ancient Vedic culture and civilization. Within a decade most humans on the planet had heard the Hare Krishna mantra. Shyamasundar Das (Sam Speerstra) was one of Bhaktivedanta Swami's earliest disciples, helping him shape the Krishna Consciousness Movement around the world.

Volume One of Shyamasundar's long-awaited memoir is now available in paperback. This is the most detailed and exciting account yet of Bhaktivedanta Swami's amazing adventures in the dawn of the Hare Krishna movement. Volume One describes the Swami's halcyon days in the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco and in London, 1967-1970, including meeting the Beatles and, with them, broadcasting Krishna philosophy and culture around the globe. A hundred intimate, eye-witness stories, along with 128 rare photos, will transport you into those magic days: chasing "rhinos" with the Swami.

It is now available at: www.chasingrhinos.com

Question: Guru Has Right to Criticize?

Respected teacher,

Please accept my humble obeisances.

I have some questions about rights:

Does the guru have the right to instruct his disciples? Does he have the right to criticize the disciples' mistakes? Then in society does the leader have the right to instruct his subordinates? Then if the guru finds the disciple's mistake, what should he do to help the disciple?

Lingling

Answer: Duty to Find Faults of Disciples

From: ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

My Dear Lingling,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

It is the duty of the spiritual master to instruct his disciples how to become free from all material desires and become fully absorbed in pure love of God. When the spiritual master sees the mistake of his disciple he instructs him how to live his life in such a way that there are no more mistakes. In other words, he trains his disciples how to become perfect in all of their thoughts, words, and deeds so that when the time comes that they leave their present bodies (the time of death) they are fully qualified to go back to home, back to Godhead to live forever with Lord Sri Krishna as a participant in His divine pastimes.

If the leader does not correct the faults of his subordinates, it is not possible for him to be a factual leader. He will be a leader in name only, not a factual leader.

In conclusion, the spiritual master is fully qualified to point out the faults of his disciples. In fact, it is his duty to point out the faults of his disciples. He must do this. This is his loving kindness upon them, to help them become free from their faults and become perfect.

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.

Your ever well-wisher,

Sankarshan Das Adhikari

"The Peace Formula" Glorified in the Media

My song "The Peace Formula," which is a poetic expression of Krishna's peace formula as given in Bhagavad-gita 5.29, and was very much appreciated by former US President Obama is now also being appreciated in the media. For example here is an article that appeared in the 15 November 2017 issue of Music Talkers:

We are hoping and praying for that day will come soon when the whole world will appreciate, accept, and follow our beloved Lord Sri Krishna's perfect peace formula.

Question: Why Do You Practice Krishna Consciousness?

Hello,

I have been reading a bit of what has been emailed. I have been so busy with closing down the station I have really not had much time to myself. I had hopes of exploring inner peace in moving here, so as life maybe slows down I can focus in more.

You have been practicing for over 30 years. What is the strongest draw for you? What keeps you wanting to continue with your religion?

Brynne

Answer: Connecting With My Eternal Spiritual Identity

Dear Brynne,

I am happy that you have been reading “Thought for the Day.” We will reveal all the secrets to you of perfect inner peace.

I have been practicing Krishna consciousness for 46 years. The strongest draw for me is connecting with my eternal spiritual identity which existed before I got my present body, is still existing now, and will continue to exist after the demise of my present material body. It is not a matter of practicing a particular religion. Any religion practiced perfectly will bring us to same consciousness.

The reason I practice Krishna consciousness is that it presents religion as a science, not as a sentiment. Anyone who becomes fixed in Krishna consciousness is automatically the best Christian, the best Hindu, the best Muslim, the best Jew, etc. In other words, Krishna consciousness is the pure essence of all religions. It is simultaneously beyond all religions and the perfection of religion, if you can understand what I mean.

Today's Thought:

Unlimited Happiness at Every Minute

Lord Sri Krishna has so kindly blessed us with such wonderful liberating knowledge. Bhagavad-gita 5:20-21 is especially profound and enlightening:

na prahrsyet priyam prapya
nodvijet prapya capriyam
sthira-buddhir asammudho
brahma-vid brahmani sthitah

bahya-sparsesv asaktatma
vindaty atmani yat sukham
sa brahma-yoga-yuktatma
sukham aksayam asnute

"A person who neither rejoices upon achieving something pleasant nor laments upon obtaining something unpleasant, who is self-intelligent, who is unbewildered, and who knows the science of God, is already situated in transcendence. Such a liberated person is not attracted to material sense pleasure but is always in trance, enjoying the pleasure within. In this way the self-realized person enjoys unlimited happiness, for he concentrates on the Supreme."

By training ourselves to always be equipoised in this way by taking complete shelter of Guru and Krishna, we will enjoy unlimited happiness at every moment. What could be more sublime than this?

Question: Song Based on Rupa Goswami's Verse?

Dear Srila Gurudeva,

All glories to Srila Prabhupada.
Please accept my humble obeisances unto your lotus feet

Gurudeva, we are listening to your album "Our Sweet Lord " since we were with you in Pune, India. My favorite tracks are "The Peace Formula" and the fourth track, "Unlimited Oceans of Nectar." Is this fourth track based on Rupa Goswami's mood? The lyrics and composition is sublime. The Hare Krishna mahamantra in that track is a attracting few friends.

Your eternal servant,
Krishnapriya.

Answer: Yes, It Is.

From: ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

My Dear Krishnapriya,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Yes, my song, "Unlimited Oceans of Nectar," is a presentation in English of Rupa Goswami’s famous verse:

tunde tandavini ratim vitanute tundavali-labdhaye
karna-kroda-kadambini ghatayate karnarbudebhyah sprham
cetah-prangana-sangini vijayate sarvendriyanam krtim
no jane janita kiyadbhir amrtaih krsneti varna-dvayi

“I do not know how much nectar the two syllables ‘Krish-na’ have produced. When the holy name of Krishna is chanted, it appears to dance within the mouth. We then desire many, many mouths. When that name enters the holes of the ears, we desire many millions of ears. And when the holy name dances in the courtyard of the heart, it conquers the activities of the mind, and therefore all the senses become inert.”

Srila Prabhupada was very fond of this verse. I am very very happy to hear that your friends were attracted by the Hare Krishna chanting. This is our mission: to attract the whole world to Hare Krishna kirtana.

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.

Deliberate Spiritual Intelligence

Lust is our enemy. It destroys our Krishna consciousness. But it can easily by conquered by one who cultivates deliberate spiritual intelligence by seeing everything through the eyes of the scriptures. Lord Krishna kindly blesses us regarding deliberate spiritual intelligence in Bhagavad-gita 3.43 as follows:

evam buddheh param buddhva
samstabhyatmanam atmana
jahi satrum maha-baho
kama-rupam durasadam

"Thus knowing oneself to be transcendental to the material senses, mind and intelligence, O mighty-armed Arjuna, one should steady the mind by deliberate spiritual intelligence [Krishna consciousness] and thus—by spiritual strength-conquer this insatiable enemy known as lust."

If we take advantage of this profound instruction of Krishna, our lives will be unlimitedly sublime.

Question: Sex Outside of Procreation?

My husband and I have been married for many years. Because of health problems, I can't have any children. Is it illicit if we have sex?

Your student

Answer: It is Illicit

In this case, you must practice celibacy. Don’t sleep together. Sleep in separate rooms, if possible, or at least in separate beds. Non-procreational sex is illicit. It is a waste of valuable energy that should be engaged in Krishna service, where you will get unlimited benefit instead of temporary titillation of the gross material senses.

Today's Thought:

Can Krishna Be Envious?

Sometimes we are asked, "Since Krishna is the origin of everything, and since envy must therefore originate in Him, then does not Krishna also have envy?"

The answer to this question has been wonderfully given by Srila Prabhupada when he gave his disciple the name, "Madhudvisa Das." In this regard Madhudvisa remembers as follows:

He said, "Your name is Madhudvisa das." The way he said it, it became genuine. When he said, "Madhudvisa das," everybody said, "Wow, Madhudvisa das? What does that mean? Who is that? What did he say?" Then I forgot my name right away. Although I heard him say it clearly, I forgot it. Later on I asked Prabhupada what the name meant. He said, " 'Dvisa' means to be envious and 'Madhu' is a great demon. So 'Madhudvisa das' means one who is envious of Madhu." I said, "Prabhupada, how can Krishna be envious of anyone?" Prabhupada said, "No. Krishna can be envious too. Madhu was such a great demon that He became envious of him and cut his head off. He annihilated the Madhu demon. Anything is possible for Krishna, any emotion in its perfect form."

We are grateful to Madhudvisa Das for sharing this with us. In this connection we should understand that Krishna's envy is not like our envy. When we are envious of someone we are not wanting to benefit him. But when Krishna is envious of the Madhu demon and kills Him, He blesses him with liberation.

My Dear Respected Gurudeva,

What is my fault in my consciousness? Why I can't fully surrender to Guru and Krishna?

Answer: Not Remembering Krishna Enough

All of us have the problem that we keep forgetting Krishna. So you have to mold your life in such a way that you are remembering Krishna more and more every day. Gradually you will remember Him more than you forget Him. At that point you will start making rapid spiritual advancement.

Today's Thought:

Launching a Global Music Initiative

The entire global civilization is lost deep in the dense darkness of bodily consciousness. Because of this no one is tasting the genuine sublime happiness of their eternal spiritual identity. Everyone is being tossed on the waves of the ocean of birth and death, sometimes thinking themselves happy and sometime feeling very sad. Even the happiness they feel is not the real happiness of the eternal spiritual being. It is instead maya-sukhaya, illusory happiness.

Because of this, our mission is to ignite a global spiritual revolution that will awaken everyone to their original divine consciousness. For this purpose we have many programs and strategies for attracting the general populace and educating them about their actual eternal identities. One such program is my initiative to attract and educate the global society through the form of popular music.

Having been a popular singer/songwriter before I came to Krishna consciousness I thought, "Why not introduce the world to Krishna consciousness through songs?" So now I have launched a popular music initiative with the goal of attracting and educating millions and billions of people music lovers all over the world in the amazingly transformational science of Krishna consciousness.

For this purpose I have a website: www.TurnOnTheWorld.com. I encourage all of you, my dedicated disciples, students, and readers to check out the site, download the songs, and share them widely with as many people as possible through one-on-one conversations, via the Internet, etc.

Our goal is to make these songs more popular even than the Beatles so that everyone all over the world can be introduced to the astoundingly sublime science of Krishna consciousness as soon as possible.

So check out the site. Download and share the songs. By working together let's ignite a global spiritual revolution that will bring love, peace, and sanity to a rapidly deteriorating global society.

Again, the website is: www.TurnOnTheWorld.com

Thank you for being here.

Question: Are We Perfect?

I know that Krishna is complete oneness. Are we the individual souls already complete oneness or do we have to become that? When God is perfect, are we then too perfect because God is in us? But if we were perfect than why do we suffer in this world?

thanks,
sincerely yours Jeanine S

Answer: Yes, But...

From: ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

My Dear Jeanine,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

As God is perfect, we the living beings are also perfect because we are qualitatively one with Him. Since the Lord desires to have a perfect loving relationship with each one of us, He gives us the free will to either love Him or leave Him. Try to understand that since love cannot be forced, we, the living beings, have been given this choice. Since the choice exists there exists also the possibility of misusing that choice. And if it is misused, we find ourselves here in this material world trying to enjoy separately from God. The misery we experience here by being separated from God is all part of God’s perfect arrangement to bring us back to our perfect position of voluntarily rendering loving service unto Him.

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.

Tranquility

Here are the lyrics to my song "Tranquility," which is attracting admiration even from non-devotees:

Tranquility

Here is the key
That will set you free
From all misery
For eternity.
Are you ready now to open up the door
That will take you to the other shore?

Chorus:
Just give your love to the Supreme.
You’ll attain tranquility.

Spoon fed with lies
For your many lives
Tricked by disguise,
Your true self you madly despised.
Are you ready for your consciousness to mend,
To bring ignorance and misery to their end?

Chorus preceded by “Then.”

Drowning in Illusion,
With confusion in profusion
Kill delusion by existential transfusion.
Are you ready for your true identity,
Empowered to absolutely be?

Chorus preceded by “Yes.”

Dylan made it clear:
“There’s some way out of here.”
So kick out all fear,
Embrace the place that is most dear.
Are you ready now to fly beyond the sky,
To that world where no one ever dies?

Chorus

There’s something amiss
If you’re not full of bliss.
If you catch my gist,
You absolutely won’t miss this.
Are you ready for all misery to be undone?
Just love the one from whom everything has come.

Chorus

So now what you do
Is completely up to you.
All misery can be through
If you transcendentalize your view.
Are you ready to realize highest truth
And eternal all-blissful youth?

Chorus
Do it! Right now! Yeah!

Question: How to Make the World Krishna Conscious?

Hare Krishna Srila Gurudeva.
Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to Your Divine Grace and Srimati Gurumataji.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.
All glories to all Devotees.

Srila Gurudeva, recently I was hearing to one of Your lectures wherein Your Divine Grace mentioned that when Sriman George Harrison met HG Syamasundar Prabhu , thereafter Krishna Consciousness took off like a rocket. I was wondering if once again the same thing can happens. I don't understand what to do. Tiny little efforts of mine are like not even a drop of water. Moreover there are stupid attempts I make to adjust outside situations. There is internal purification struggle, there is outside preaching struggle and so much to do. I want to do something, but I don't know what and how to do. I am simply sitting in office and pondering what to do to make Hare Krishna take off as rocket again. History has to repeat. But I have no idea what to do for that. I am so confused. Please help me see things clearly.

Can the whole world become Krishna conscious in a second? Does whole world here means whole planetary system with all the upper and lower planets?

How personal service to the spiritual master helps to make the whole world also Krishna Conscious?

How even cleaning plates is helpful to push forward Krishna Consciousness movement?

Many people come to the center for some days but they don't change their habits. Though they are getting benefited they are still not fully practicing. What can be done then?

Thank you so much, Srila Gurudeva, for providing shelter to this crazy rascal.

Your insignificant servant

Answer: Be Krishna Conscious

By chanting the holy names without offense you will naturally have an uplifting impact on the global consciousness. And then take whatever preaching opportunities you get.

Srila Prabhupada predicts in his purport to Sri Caitanya-caritamrita, Adi Lila, Chapter 13, Text 32 that the whole universe will in due course of time become Krishna conscious:

"Since the sankirtana movement was first set in motion five hundred years ago by Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu's desire that it spread all over the universe, the Krishna consciousness movement, in continuity of that same motion, is now spreading all over the world, and in this way it will gradually spread all over the universe. With the spread of the Krishna consciousness movement, everyone will merge in an ocean of love of Krishna."

Both cleaning plates and serving the spiritual master clean your heart, and the more your heart becomes clean, the more your presence in this world has an uplifting impact on the global consciousness.

Even their partial practice is beneficial. Befriend them and be merciful to them encouraging to fully adopt the process of Krishna consciousness. In this way they will get more and more benefit.

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.

Whole Universe Krishna Conscious

Anyone who fully dedicates himself to Lord Caitanya's mission by assisting Him in delivering all of the fallen, conditioned souls in this universe naturally becomes very dear to Him. And there is truly nothing more sublime, divine, and wonderful than to become dear to Lord Caitanya who is Lord Sri Krishna Himself in His most merciful and magnanimous incarnation as His own devotee. Therefore let us all take advantage of His unbounded mercy by fully embracing Lord Caitanya's universal deliverance mission as also our mission. Let us all pray that we can become pure devotees and that we can inundate this universe with Krishna consciousness. This will be the perfection of our existence.

Question: Difference Between Devotion and Faith?

Please accept my humble obeisances.

What is the difference between devotion and faith?

Srila Prabhupada prays to Krishna on his way to America, saying that he has no knowledge or devotion, but he has faith upon His holy name.

What does he mean by this?

Your servant,
Sreya

Answer: Faith to Be Able Attain Devotion

One can have faith that, through this process of chanting Hare Krishna, he can achieve the perfectional stage of pure devotion. This prayer expresses Srila Prabhupada’s humility. Even though he has pure devotion and is full with transcendental knowledge, he humbly feels himself to be ignorant and devoid of devotion.

Today's Thought:

Departure of Gayatri Devi Dasi

I just received the sad news from my dear Godbrother, Amarendra Prabhu, that his beloved wife, Srimati Gayatri Devi Das has departed from this world. Here is what he has written:

Gayatri dd and I joined Krishna consciousness when Gargamuni Prabhu [then a sannyasi] came to Gainesville, FL in November, 1970. We were living together in a small duplex a couple of blocks from the University of Florida campus, where we were going to school. A short time after meeting Gargamuni, we invited him to move in with us.

By mid-January 1971, over 100 students a day were coming to the original “Krishna House” for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. About ten students soon moved into the living room of the duplex, and another six or seven were camping in the back yard. That program, of course, went on to become one of the most successful college preaching centers in the history of ISKCON, in no small part because of Gayatri’s dedication and loving disposition.

Gargamuni, who was one of the original eleven devotees to join Srila Prabhupada at 26 Second Avenue in New York City in 1966, learned how to cook directly from Prabhupada. He, in turn, taught Gayatri everything he knew. Later, along with Mangalananda Prabhu and several other very hard working devotees, Gayatri baked (in an open brick oven) the legendary Vyasa Puja banana cake for Srila Prabhupada at the 1972 Bhagavata Dharma Festival in New Vrindavana. She was also the “Inventor” of the modern version of Gauranga Potatoes, and is famous for the renowned “4:00 offering” that she would cook everyday for Sri Sri Gaura-Nitai when the Gainesville Temple was located on Depot Avenue.

Gayatri and I stayed in Gainesville until 1979. Gayatri preached, cooked and sewed many gorgeous outfits for the Deities, while I proceeded to drive everyone crazy as the Temple President. Still passionate and insane from my participation in the anti-war movement, I would “heavy” out the devotees and create a complete mess. Gayatri would quietly slip in behind me and clean everything up with her motherly love, compassion and kindness. We were initiated together around midnight on July 29, 1971, when Srila Prabhupada came to Gainesville to speak at the University.

While in Gainesville, Gayatri convinced countless students and young people to join Krishna consciousness. Simultaneously, she made more true friends than I can ever recount. However, it was after we moved to the Los Angeles in July, 1982, that Gayatri’s true character fully blossomed. In addition to the hundreds of friends that Gayatri had made in Gainesville and all over the world, including and especially Srila Prabhupada’s sister, Pishima (who often referred to Gayatri as her “daughter”) she made hundreds of new friends on the West Coast, and developed a special bond with devotee children.

Gayatri had been battling ovarian cancer for over three years, when an obstructed bile duct required hospitalization at Providence St. John’s Health Center in February, 2017. Her liver and lymph nodes were also enlarged. She was initially admitted to the ICU in the hope that the doctors could get the cancer under control. When four weeks of dialysis, antibiotics, and other treatments failed (she was no longer a candidate for additional chemotherapy) it became clear that she would not be coming home, and she was transferred to a hospice room in the hospital. When we told her that she was going to leave her body and join Prabhupada and Pishima in the spiritual world, she sweetly and simply replied, “okay, that’s nice.”

When word of her condition spread, a steady procession of devotees, friends, and other well-wishers came to see her in order to express their love and appreciation for her friendship, kindness, and service to Srila Prabhupada and Pishima, and to say goodbye. Much of the time her room was so crowded that devotees had to wait in the hall to get in. The hospital staff was very kind and understanding (it was a Catholic hospital) and tolerated constant kirtana and commotion. When devotees walked in the front door of the hospital, the staff immediately knew who they were and directed them straight to Gayatri’s room.

After the doctors stopped the dialysis, they gave her about 48 hours to live, at most. Being who she was Gayatri hung on for another 10 days or so, probably because she was having such a good time being around all of the devotees. As I was leaving the hospital early one morning, one of the nurses said to me, “well, she’s probably not leaving [her body] because you keep chanting that Hare Krishna thing all the time. Maybe if you stop chanting, she’ll go.”

When Gaura Purnima approached and the reality set in that she would not be able go to the temple, Manjari Erlichman brought her beautiful, installed Gaura-Nitai Deities down to the hospital from Northern California and set them up at the foot of Gayatri’s bed. Pictures of Prabhupada and Krishna were plastered all over her room. On Gaura Purnima morning the devotees helped Gayatri offer arotika, dress, and bathe the Deities. They also watched Mayapura Mangala Arotika on the internet, and had their own little celebration at the hospital.

Gayatri’s dear friends Balavi dd and Anangamanjari dd came from Alachua to be with her in her final days, as did Krishna Kumari dd from Arizona. Madhavi dd, Jagadambika dd, Kalpalatika dd, Divyadrstri Ward dd, Parvati dd (and so many others – please forgive me if I have forgotten someone) as well as our children Parama Karuna, Manjari, and Danapati were a constant presence at her side.

On one occasion, Yadubara Prabhu came and showed Gayatri an extended, advance preview of his upcoming movie, which made her very happy. On another occasion, our long-time friends, Pusta Krishna Prabhu and Darubrahma dd, came to visit for three days. One afternoon, Pusta chanted, by himself, for six straight hours without instruments, until his voice gave out.

In the midst of all of this, one thing in particular caught my attention – the large number of “devotee kids” that were also coming to visit. When we arrived in Los Angeles in July, 1982, the gurukula system was still moderately functional. In Los Angeles, there was a day school and the farm in Three Rivers. Whenever there was a break from school or the asrama, all of our kids’ friends would rush to our apartment to hang out and have fun. Gayatri, of course, would feed them to their hearts’ content. As I have now come to realize, however, that was not the real reason they came.

Recently, it was necessary for me to revisit a child abuse matter that occurred at various places between 1972 and 1989. In reading the heartbreaking account of what this child went through, I realized that the person was one of my daughter’s friends. I also suddenly realized that this is why so many children were flocking to Gayatri’s association – to take shelter from the world of chaos and pain that we so-called ISKCON adults had created for them.

Like everyone else in her life, Gayatri accepted them unconditionally for who they were – devotee children born into a movement that we adults had voluntarily chosen to join. With Gayatri, there was never any judgment, criticism, or harsh instructions. She loved them without condition or reservation, and they loved her back. This was never more apparent than when they came in droves to show their love and affection and to say goodbye when Gayatri was getting ready to depart this world of birth, death, disease, old age, and perpetual pain.

As I now look back on Gayatri’s life and my own impending mortality, the most telling thing I can say is that in the 47 years that we were together in the Movement, I never heard her tell another devotee “Oh, Prabhu, you are in maya” or “Oh, Prabhu, that is maya.” Nor did I ever hear her criticize other devotees, either to their face or behind their back. Whenever there was a misunderstanding with another devotee, she would blame herself, and (much to my consternation) still not criticize.

Some may say that Gayatri was in “hippie consciousness” and doing a disservice by not correcting the mistakes that may have been there. That, however, is not who Gayatri was . . . as a person or as a devotee. She had no time or interest in fighting, faultfinding, or gossip. And, judging by the incredible number of Prabhupada disciples, and their children, who knew and loved her, and the auspicious way that she peacefully passed from this world on March 17, 2017 in the immediate presence of Sri Sri Gaura-Nitai and the devotees who loved her most, maybe there is something that we can learn from her example.

~ Amarendra das
-------------------------------------

Now here some memories from me:

My memories of being with Gayatri and her husband Amarendra are some of the sweetest and most cherished memories of my entire life. When I was sent from Miami to join them in Gainesville we were only three devotees living in an upstairs rented apartment. But within only one year by our combined preaching efforts and the mercy of Srila Prabhupada and Lord Caitanya we had 25 devotees and we purchased two buildings on a piece of land near the University of Florida campus. It was a truly miraculous, mystical experience.

One day I was sent by Amarendra to restart a program of distributing prasadam on the Plaza of the Americas on the University of Florida campus which had gone on previously when Gargamuni Maharaja (now Gargamuni Das) was in Gainesville. It soon become a daily free lunch. I would go out every day to distribute prasadam and preach. One day our vehicle was broken so I took a wheelbarrow to transport the prasadam to the campus. No one told me to do this. It was my own spontaneous enthusiasm that come hell or high water the Plaza program must go on!

That program has now been going on unbroken since the day in 1973 that Amarendra Prabhu send me out to restart it. After a couple of years the university decided to kick the devotees off the campus. They took the prasadam to a lab and came up with report that the prasadam was contaminated, even though it had been cooked in the temple kitchen which was certified as clean by the health department. They ordered the devotees not to distribute the prasadam. But Amarendra defied the order and continued the program. The devotees got arrested and were dragged across the campus to the police cars while scores of students watched in horror and booed the police. When it was taken to court the judge said, "Let the Krishna's have their picnic." And the Hare Krishna lunch program continued. It is still going on now over forty years later. I am very happy that by the loving kindness of Amarendra and Gayatri I got to be a part of this historic and most auspicious program, the longest standing prasadam distribution program in the history of ISKCON.

I have given more memories on the video which is below.

My Letter Regarding Gayatri's Departure

My Dear Amarendra,

Please accept my humble obeisances_/\ò_.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

I just found out the news about Gayatri and it broke my heart.

Hoping this meets you in good health,
Always your humble servant,

Sankarshan Das

Amarendra Prabhu's Answer

Hare Krishna Sankarshan Prabhu,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

I’m not at home right now but saw your message. I was too busy managing doctors, hospital, and all the devotees that were around to inform anyone myself of what was going on when Gayatri was in the hospital, so I really don’t know who knew what.

When I saw a picture of the new permanent Krishna Lunch sign they just put up on the University of Florida campus, however, I thought I should write something in honor of Gayatri who did so much to build up that program - much more than I could have ever dreamed of doing.

I do miss her laugh and kindness, but her departure was super auspicious, so I should not lament. I do remember, though, when it was just you, me and her, trying to spread Prabhupada’s message way out in the wilderness, “thousands of miles from the birth place of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu.”

I’ve seen a lot of pics of you on Facebook blissing out in Vrindavan during Kartika, and I am very happy you are doing so well.

Your servant,
Amarendra Das

Make the Whole World Krishna Conscious

The entire world is in a suffering condition, and we have the formula how to solve all of the world's problems. Therefore, simply as a matter of compassion, we must now be very eager to make the whole world Krishna conscious. Since there is no other solution besides Krishna consciousness for the world's ever-increasingly devastating problems, we must become now very eager and aggressive to flood this entire planet in the tidal wave of Lord Caitanya's most sublime causeless mercy.

It's Time to Get Serious

It's time to get serious about Krishna consciousness as the prime goal of our lives. We can fail in every other way, but if we are successful in Krishna consciousness, our lives are a grand success. Or we can be successful in so many ways in this material world, but if we fail to become Krishna conscious, our lives are a dismal failure. Therefore in all times, places, and circumstances we must remain completely focused on awakening our dormant Krishna consciousness as the prime goal of our lives.

Wake Up!

Krishna explains very nicely in Bhagavad-gita 2.69:

"What is night for all beings is the time of awakening for the self-controlled; and the time of awakening for all beings is night for the introspective sage."

So one can wake up late for engaging in material sense gratification, or one can rise early for self-realization. The devotees prefer to rise early before the sunrise to utilize the most valuable early morning hours for intensely focusing their minds on Krishna. The materialists sleep as late as possible, sleeping until they have to wake up to make it to work on time. When you wake up and for what purpose you wake will determine your future.

Dear Guru,

Please explain me why should I please Krishna? Just because I'm His creation, I don't feel like pleasing Him. There should be something more. Please let me know what it is.

Answer: Your Natural Healthy Position

From: ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

My Dear Shreyansh,

All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Pleasing Krishna is your natural, healthy position. Your relationship with Krishna is like the relationship between the hand and the body. The hand naturally serves the needs of the entire body. If it is not able to do so, one requires medical attention to get the hand working again.

Similarly, the individual soul naturally serves the needs of the Supreme Soul. If he is not able to do so, he is in a miserable diseased state, and he requires the guidance of the bona fide spiritual master how to get back to his original, natural position.

Indeed, no one else is actually a genuine friend of all because everyone in this material world is self-interested. They only ultimately care about their own sense gratification. My Dear Anita,

One who is in the perfectional stage of samadhi, pure Krishna bhakti, has mastered the art of perfectly dovetailing all of his thoughts, words, and deeds in all times, places, and circumstances with the desires of Lord Sri Krishna.

One attains this stage by accepting a bona fide spiritual master and becoming fully obedient unto him. Today's Thought:

We Will Lead the World Out of Chaos

Our beloved spiritual master, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, the Founder-Acarya of ISKCON, the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, has blessed us, his followers, that one day we will be the leaders of the world. Here is what he wrote in this regard from Bombay on 26 November 1974 to his disciple Saurabha Das:

"So it is up to you Europeans and Americans to push it all over the world, and one day you will be the leaders of the world. It is not difficult. You just have to work sincerely and intelligently. Krishna will do everything."

So there it is. We have the blessing to be the world leaders. Now we simply have to work sincerely and intelligently, and one day Srila Prabhupada's most sublime, divine prediction will come true. We will factually be the leaders of the world. This does not necessarily mean political leaders, although that could also be true. In Vedic culture the brahmanas, the priestly class, are the factual leaders of the society because the political leaders rule the state in accordance with the instructions they receive from the brahmanas.

Kindly note that Srila Prabhupada wrote this letter at a time when, for the most part, only Europeans and Americans had joined this movement. Now that many hundreds of thousands have joined us from other parts of the world this prediction also applies to them as well. The ISKCON devotees will become the world leaders because the entire global society will follow their directions how their nations should be organized and functioning for the ultimate benefit of all living beings, namely their deliverance back to home, back to Godhead.

May that day come soon! May that day come very soon!

How to Defeat Depression

In the mental state known as depression one may feel that this life is completely useless and hopeless, that there is no way that he can ever find any real happiness in this world. Depressed persons sometimes develop suicidal feelings and may even sometimes foolishly commit suicide. Why do such thoughts and feelings arise when the soul by it's very nature is full of bliss? Depression happens due to the ignorance of bodily misidentification. If one thinks that he is his temporary material body, which is constantly tortured by three types of miseries, he will naturally feel miserable and may go into a state of deep depression. Therefore the solution for depression is to realize one's eternal spiritual identify beyond his material body as a servant of Krishna and then to practically engage oneself 24 hours a day in loving service to Krishna. This will completely defeat his depression, and put him into a state of unadulterated, uninterrupted transcendental bliss.

Question: Why Did Krishna Make Me?

Dear Gurudeva,

Certain doubts have assailed me which, by your mercy, I would like them to be resolved:

Why do I live? Why did Krishna make me? What does Krishna want from me? I did not ask to exist, but by the supreme will of Krishna or God I exist. So why did God, Krishna, make me?

Answer: To Experience Your Unique Love

You exist so Krishna can relish unlimited happiness in having a certain unique type of loving relationship that He has only with you and nobody else. Even though there are only five primary types of loving relationships that Krishna shares with His devotees, within these five divisions of relationships there is an infinite number of sub-divisions. Variety is the mother of enjoyment, therefore there is an infinite number of living beings each having a totally unique flavor of loving relationship with Lord Sri Krishna.

Question: Depend on Astrology and Krishna Or Depend Only on Krishna?

Please accept my humble obeisances.

This is a humble request to you to clarify my doubt about astrology.

An astrologer is like a weather man who can tell if it is going to rain. If I take an umbrella or postpone my travel then I will not get wet. Going by the simple rain and umbrella analogy, I tend to believe that an astrologer's prediction can reduce the effect of our karmic reaction or in other words has the power to change our fate or course of life.

So I humbly beg for your help into this matter so that I can get the answers to my questions which is should we take help of astrology to enhance our life or mitigate our problems? Because too much stress in life is not conducive to Krishna consciousness.

I know that over indulgence into astrology would mean less and less dependency on Krishna. Kindly guide me on how to strike the right balance or leave astrology for good and depend only on Krishna?

Your Servant,
Anindo Roy

Answer: Depend Only on Krishna

From: ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

My Dear Anindo,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Regarding astrology, Srila Prabhupada said on 14 Marcy 1976 in Mayapura:

Natural sequence--just like you are infected, some contaminous disease. You'll suffer. There is a story that one fool was sitting on a branch of a tree and he was cutting off. And somebody said, "You'll fall down." "Ha, fall down.” But when he fell down he said, "Oh, you are a great astrologer." So who goes to the astrologer? Only fools and rascal. No sane man goes. (end of quote)

Personally I do not waste my time with astrologers because nowadays due to the influence of the Kali yuga they have lost the ability to give accurate readings. And even if the reading is accurate, when one surrenders to Krishna he is no longer under the influence of the stars. He is now under the influence of Krishna. This means his present and future is now changed.

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.

Today I read the Introduction of Bhagavad-gita As It Is. The first mantra tells how the spiritual master opens the disciple's eyes. This reminds me of the verse from the Brahma-samhita how one's eyes become anointed with the salve of love of God.

Is there any difference between these verses?

Sincerely,
K.G.

P.S. Yesterday I chanted 8 rounds of japa on the beads and today 16.

Answer: They Refer to the Same Thing

The two verses are referring to the same thing because it is only by the mercy of the spiritual master that one’s eyes become anointed with love of God and that he thus becomes able to see God everywhere.

That’s wonderful that you have chanted 16 rounds today. Now maintain this every day along with the regulative principles so that you soon can become initiated and thus qualified to go back to home, back to Godhead.

The Most Fortunate Person

Krishna's pure devotee is the most fortunate person in all of existence because just as he has fully given himself to Krishna, Krishna also fully gives Himself to him. When you possess God you possess everything. So who can measure the unlimited good fortune of that person who has fully given himself to Krishna? The extent of his good fortune is inconceivable. So who is that person in all of existence who would not want to fully give himself to Krishna? That would be only the most ignorant of fools.

Make Everyone Happy

Srila Prabhupada describes our mission:

"That is our mission: we want to see everyone happy. Sarve sukhino bhavantu. People do not know how to become happy. They do not take the standard path to become happy. They manufacture their own way. That is the difficulty. Therefore, Risabhadeva gave this advice to his sons: 'My dear boys, just undergo austerity for transcendental realization.' Everyone is performing austerity. This boy I know -- he had to go to a foreign country to learn commercial management. Now he is well situated. In this way. everyone must undergo some austerity for future life. So why not take that austerity for permanent happiness? You have to purify your existence and your body. As many times as you accept a material body, you will have to change it. But as soon as you get a spiritual body, there is no question of change. You already have a spiritual body. Now, due to our material contamination, we are developing the material body. But if we associate with spiritual life, then we shall develop a spiritual body. The same example I have several times given is that if you put an iron rod within fire, it will become like fire. Is it not?"

Just see how merciful and intelligent is Krishna's pure devotee, Srila Prabhupada.

Question: Krishna doesn't enjoy as much as His devotee?

Greetings Gurudeva

In one of your questions and answers seminars you said that Krishna consciousness is so full of pleasure that Krishna himself is also in Krishna consciousness. Prabhupada many times described Krishna as the Supreme Enjoyer. If Krishna is the Supreme Enjoyer that means he should be in the most pleasure, so how is it that Krishna being Himself is not in as much pleasure as a devotee in Krishna consciousness?

Hare Krishna.

Richard Browne

Answer: Krishna enjoys the most by being His own devotee

From: Mumbai, India

My Dear Richard,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Krishna is in fact the Supreme Enjoyer. He enjoys unlimitedly at every moment. But to expand His enjoyment even more He adopts the mood of being His own devotee by manifesting Himself as Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu.

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.

Returning to the USA

Today, 6 November, we are returning to the USA via two flights: Mumbai to London and London to Austin. After spending a wondrous seven weeks in the holy land of India it is amazing how it seems as if we have always lived here, that we never lived anywhere else. This reminds us how, in a higher sense, we have always been devotees of Krishna. We have never been anything else. Only for a limited amount of time we were dreaming that we were something else. So now is the time for us to fully be who we actually are, the devotees of Krishna, and stop trying to be what we are not, citizens of this nasty material world.

Your Grace,

Entigha Effiong

Answer: Surrender to Krishna

From: ISKCON Pune, India

My Dear Entigha,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Whatever problems we have in this material world are the special blessings of Lord Sri Krishna to help us remember that this nasty place is not our actual home. However, Lord Sri Krishna will mercifully reduce your difficulties here if you will fully dedicate yourself to Him. So my best advice to you is that you should fully dedicate your life to Lord Sri Krishna under the direction of the bona fide spiritual master. In this way you will experience unlimited happiness within your heart even in this nasty material world where there is danger at every step.

Question: A Mother's Womb, the Source of Life, is Filthy?

Dear Gurudeva,

Hare Krishna!

All glories to Srila Prabhupada.
Please accept my humble obeisance.

Hoping and praying for your good health. Thank you for your kind guidance through your daily mails and videos.

In one of the lectures here, I heard that the mother's womb is one of the filthiest place on earth, which is filled with urine, stool, bile, phlegm and other impurities. I was unable to digest the fact that a place where a life is created can be as filthy as described. Is there any mention about this in our scriptures and do the modern day medical science agree to this?

Haribol.

Your insignificant servant,
Lal Mohan

Answer: Life is Not Created in the Womb

From: ISKCON Pune, India

My Dear Lal,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Kindly note that life is not created in the womb. All life is coming from the pure transcendental body of Krishna. It is the only the material body that comes into being in the mother's womb.

In this connection Srila Prabhupada writes as follows in his book The Nectar of Devotion:

A fortunate child in the womb of his mother prayed to Krishna as follows: "O enemy of Kamsa, I am suffering so much because of this material body. Now I am trapped within a mess of blood, urine and liquid stool, within the womb of my mother. Because I am living in such a condition, I am suffering great pangs. Therefore, O divine ocean of mercy, please be kind to me. I have no ability to engage in Your loving devotional service, but please save me!"

Whether modern day science agrees or not we accept the statements of scripture as fact. Modern day science is constantly changing its view because it is speculative, not authoritative.

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.

Krishna's Peace Formula Can Transform the Entire World

Krishna's peace formula can indeed transform the entire world ushering the most wonderful metamorphosis the world has ever seen. Therefore we must make it easily available now for the entire world population to hear, understand, and implement. If this can be accomplished it will truly be the greatest paradigm shift that has ever transpired in all of universal history. Krishna states His peace formula very simply in Bhagavad-gita 5.29:

bhoktaram yajña-tapasam sarva-loka-mahesvaram
suhrdam sarva-bhatanam jñatva mam santim rcchati

“A person in full consciousness of Me, knowing Me to be the ultimate beneficiary of all sacrifices and austerities, the Supreme Lord of all planets and demigods, and the benefactor and well-wisher of all living entities, attains peace from the pangs of material miseries.”

In this connection Srila Prabhupada explains as follows:

"When people know that the Supreme Lord, Krishna, is the supreme enjoyer, the supreme proprietor and the most intimate well-wishing friend of all living entities, peace and prosperity will ensue all over the world."

So therefore let us do everything possible to popularize Krishna's peace formula all over the world.

2 November: This morning when I told my Godbrother that I am leaving Vrindavana he said, "You are going back to the material world." I disagreed with him because I am going to ISKCON Pune, which is also very much the spiritual world. Then I considered that by traveling and preaching Krishna consciousness all over the world I am always in the spiritual world wherever I go. This is the beauty of being Krishna conscious. One is no longer living in the material world. He is living in the spiritual world at every minute.

Amazing Glories of Vasistha Muni

In his purport to Srimad Bhagavatam 1.9.6-7 Srila Prabhupada describes Vasistha Muni as follows:

"The great celebrated sage among the brahmanas, well known as the Brahmarsi Vasisthadeva. He is a prominent figure in both the Ramayana and Mahabharata periods. He celebrated the coronation ceremony of the Personality of Godhead Sri Rama. He was present also on the Battlefield of Kuruksetra. He could approach all the higher and lower planets, and his name is also connected with the history of Hiranyakasipu. There was a great tension between him and Visvamitra, who wanted his kamadhenu, wish-fulfilling cow. Vasistha Muni refused to spare his kamadhenu, and for this Visvamitra killed his one hundred sons. As a perfect brahmana he tolerated all the taunts of Visvamitra. Once he tried to commit suicide on account of Visvamitra's torture, but all his attempts were unsuccessful. He jumped from a hill, but the stones on which he fell became a stack of cotton, and thus he was saved. He jumped into the ocean, but the waves washed him ashore. He jumped into the river, but the river also washed him ashore. Thus all his suicide attempts were unsuccessful. He is also one of the seven rsis and husband of Arundhati, the famous star."

This great sage was the spiritual master of Lore Ramacandra and was also present when Sukadeva Goswami spoke the Srimad Bhagavatam to Pariksit Maharaja.

Question: Krishna Conscious While Executing Duties?

Srila Gurudeva,

Respectful Pranams unto You!

How was it possible for Arjuna to concentrate on the war and think of Krishna at the same time?

When we perform our daily duties how should we fix our minds on Krishna and perform our activities, for example those which need concentration such as studying?

Seeking your blessings and guidance,
Bhargavi

Answer: Perform Duties as Ordered by Krishna

From: Sri Vrindavana Dhama, India

My Dear Bhargavi,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Because Arjuna was fighting the war on the order of Lord Krishna he was naturally Krishna conscious while he was fighting.

Similarly, you should engage only in those daily duties that you have been ordered to engage in by Lord Krishna and by your spiritual master. This is how you will also be naturally Krishna conscious just like Arjuna while executing your duties.

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.
