Today's Thought:

Conquering Over Depression

Sometimes when cultivating Krishna consciousness the neophyte devotee becomes depressed or discouraged in his practice and loses all enthusiasm to continue. For a devotee in such a situation Srila Prabhupada very nicely writes in his purport to Narada Bhakti Sutra, Text 5 as follows:

"When one becomes disappointed in his service to the Supreme Lord, that disappointment must be rejected and replaced with confidence in attaining the ultimate goal, love of Godhead. The devotee should patiently follow the rules and regulations of devotional service so that the day will come when he will achieve, all of a sudden, all the perfection of devotional service. He should not lament for any loss or any reverse in his advancement in spiritual life."

Heeding these wonderful words of Srila Prabhupada, the depressed neophyte devotee should kick out his depression and enthusiastically and confidently continue cultivating pure devotional service within his heart.

Today's Thought:

Devi-dhama Spiritual Revolution

Our desire is to pull off a spiritual revolution that will inundate planet earth and our entire universe in a tidal wave of Krishna bhakti and then break through the coverings of this universe to engulf all the universes of Devi-dhama, this material world, which is the one-fourth portion of Lord's Sri Krishna's creation. We cannot tolerate seeing the souls of this material world unnecessarily suffering like anything simply due to their lack of Krishna consciousness. Since we know that this deliverance mission is a purely spiritual desire blessed by all of the great Vaisnava acaryas, we are begging Krishna that we can now be successful in pulling off this multi-universal spiritual revolution. If by Krishna's grace we can do this, it will surely be one of the most astoundingly sublime paradigm shifts in all of history. So Lord Krishna, again and again we are praying that You kindly bless us with success in our multiversal deliverance mission.

Question: Why Am I Not Happy?

Hare Krishna,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

I wanted to ask, "What should I do if I am losing my motivation to do any service because I do not feel any happiness in the heart?" Because of this I understand that Krishna is not happy. Perhaps He is not pleased with my efforts, that I am doing something completely wrong. It is said that Krishna is like a root of the tree and if the root is watered, all the tree becomes satisfied, lush and strong. So I make a conclusion that either I am not watering the root or I am disconnected from the tree. I am trying to do the best I can in chanting and doing service but I can see that my efforts are not enough. I'm so desperate I'm asking everyone for some advice, some blessings. The only good thing is that I understood that everything is useless unless Krishna is satisfied but I do not know how to do that. There was always this happiness in the heart or at least some reciprocation from Krishna before and now I feel completely disconnected. Can it be due to offences?

Your servant,
B.D.

Answer: You Are Not Begging for Pure Bhakti

From: Sri Vrindavana Dhama, India

My Dear B.D.,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

I am very pleased by your sincere endeavor to become solidly situated in Krishna consciousness. Just as a child learning to walk sometimes slips and falls but is encouraged by his parents to try and try again until he masters the art of walking, in a similar way the spiritual master and Vaisnavas continually encourage the struggling neophyte devotee so that he or she will in due course of time become a fixed-up advanced devotee who deeply relishes within his heart the most sublime nectar of Krishna consciousness at every minute.

What you need for perfect happiness is pure bhakti. So if you will regularly every day pray to Guru and Krishna to bless you with pure bhakti, you will be amazed to see how the material world in which you are now greatly suffering is gradually transformed into the spiritual world, a realm of unlimited peace, happiness, and sweet loving relationships.

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.

Today's Thought:

Don't Be Offensive to Devotees

Offending a Vaisnava destroys our spiritual life because it is only through loving relationships with devotees that we become connected with Krishna. Therefore vaisnava aparadha, offending a Vaisnava, is called the mad elephant offense. When a mad elephant enters your garden, by the trampling of his feet, he destroys all the plants. Therefore we should always be in the mood of falling down at the feet of the Vaisnavas and begging for their mercy that we can always be engaged in lovingly serving them with all of our thoughts, words, and deeds for all of eternity. This is how we will become strongly fixed in Krishna consciousness and will never fall down.

Question: Who is Prabhupada's Successor?

Answer: All of Prabhupada's Loyal Disciples

From: Sri Vrindavana Dhama, India

My Dear Murali,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

When asked who would succeed him as the leader of the Krishna consciousness movement, Srila Prabhupada replied: "All of my disciples will take the legacy. If you want, you can also take it. Sacrifice everything. I -- one -- may soon pass away. But they are hundreds, and this movement will increase. It's not that I'll give an order: 'Here is the next leader.' Anyone who follows the previous leadership is a leader. I don't make any distinction between Indian and European. All my disciples are leaders... as much as they follow purely. If you want to follow, then you can also lead. But you don't want to follow. 'Leader' means one who is a first-class disciple. Evam parampara-praptam. One who is perfectly following. Our instruction is, guru mukha-padma-vakya. Do you know this? Ara na kariha mane asa. [My only desire is to have my consciousness purified by the words emanating from the lotus mouth of my spiritual master']. To become a leader is not very difficult, provided one is prepared to follow the instructions of the bona fide guru."

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.

Today's Thought:

Change of Career Plans

Back in the 60's due to frustration with the material way of life instead of choosing a normal career in the material society I decided to become holy beggar in India. However one evening when I was in the process of getting ready to go to the holy land I had a profound realization. At the time I was on the philosophical pathway of denying or cutting out all material attachments. I was so impressed with what I realized that I wrote it down:

I denied and I denied until I could deny no longer, and then I had to start accepting.

In other words if you deny everything, you have to ultimately also deny denial. At this point one must find something transcendental beyond this material existence to accept. So at this point of resolving to leave or renounce the world I resolved to stay within the material society to save the world. So instead of going to India I felt I was being called to San Francisco to be part of a spiritual revolution. So I went to San Francisco where the first people I met were the Hare Krishna devotees. It took some time but gradually I realized that these were to people with whom I was to to join for bringing about a spiritual revolution of Planet Earth. That's why I am here where I am today.

Question: Medical Doctor's Preaching?

Hare Krishna Gurudeva!
Please accept my pranams!

Gurudeva, I am studying medicine 1st year. How can I engage in glorifying the Lord in my profession?

We were presented with a scenario today, wherein, we were told that a patient (female) who happens to be a model/dancer, has been diagnosed with something that needs a surgical treatment. But she refuses the treatment, because she doesn't want her body to have any marks/ scars. How am I to take decisions in these situations involving other souls? Can I help her in any way?

I try to ask how it affects my spiritual practice, but I don't find any answers.

Kindly help me.

Thanking you for Your time.

Answer: Enlighten Patients With Higher Knowledge

From: Sri Vrindavana Dhama, India

My Dear Bhargavi,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

You can enlighten your patients that they are not their material bodies, that their actual identity is the eternal spirit-soul who dwells within the body. You can also explain to them that when the spirit-soul within is brought back to its original, natural healthy state of loving service to Krishna or God, one’s mind and one’s body will naturally become more healthy.

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.

Today's Thought:

We've Lost Touch With Reality

We've lost touch with reality. At the present moment we are living in a dream state considering ourselves to be these bodies and foolishly thinking ourselves to be the center of all existence. Because of this illusion we are very much caught up in the most entangling network, the cycle of repeated birth, death, old age, and disease. It is time now that we stop foolishly punishing ourselves by our misguided attempts to become happy in a way that is completely artificial. It is time now to revive our actual all-blissful, fully cognizant natures as the eternal servants of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Krishna. Let us not hesitate for a moment. Let us do it now with complete, total focus of mind, intelligence, and soul.

Answer: Surrender Means Accept Krishna's Orders

From: Sri Vrindavana Dhama, India

My Dear Virbadhra,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Surrender to Krishna means to accept His orders given in the Bhagavad-gita as your very life and soul and thus to strictly follow them. This surrender is enacted by obeying Krishna’s order to accept a guru and to then be fully obedient to your guru, the bona fide representative of Lord Sri Krishna.

Question: Sinless Vegetarian Food?

Haribol, Srila Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble obeisances onto your lotus feet.

Please guide me in this aspect. We know that killing animals and eating them is sinful and hence Lord Krishna does not allow us to do so. But when there is debate about vegetarian food there is always an objection from our critics that plants also have life and thus we are guilty of killing them. Then we say that according to the Bhagavad-gita offering vegetarian food to Krishna frees us from sin. But how can we give them a valid scientific explanation of how all sins are destroyed when we offer our vegetarian food to Krishna?

I seek your blessings, guidance, mercy and shelter!

Answer: When One is Serving Krishna

From: Sri Vrindavana Dhama, India

My Dear Anamika,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

When an ordinary citizen who is driving his car runs a red light he will receive a ticket from the police for breaking the law. However, when an ambulance driver on a emergency runs a red light the police will give him an escort to help get the injured person to the hospital as soon as possible. In a similar way, just as one who serves the public is facilitated by the police, one who serves the Lord is facilitated by the Lord that through sacrificial eating he can become delivered from all sinful reactions.

You owe it to yourself not to cheat yourself by foolishly relegating yourself to an eternal hellish existence of birth and death in the material world, looping the loop through the 8,400,000 species of life again and again and again. Question: Sudras Can Get Initiated?

Respected Sir,

How are you? Thank you for taking time in reading this email.

I came to Krishna consciousness a few years back. I have the questions below which I am afraid to ask any one:

a) Will Krishna accept the service irrespective of the race, religion and sub-caste? By birth I came from a sudra family. Sometimes I feel guilty in doing the service because of my caste.
b) By taking initiation am I putting my spiritual master in trouble because he is taking away all the sins from me? Will this affect him materially and spiritually?
c) As a father of three what is the best way to serve Krishna if I am not getting initiated in this lifetime? Will I get chance in my next life?

If I want to become a disciple what are the eligibility criteria that I should have? Can I become the disciple without getting initiated and go back to Godhead?

Pardon me for my ignorance.

Thank you.

Raj

Answer: All Are Sudras in this Age

From: Sri Vrindavana Dhama, India

My Dear Raj,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

According to the scriptures in this age of Kali we are all born as sudras, but by this process of Krishna consciousness we are all transformed into Vaisnavas, which is a higher position than being a brahmana.

Just as a doctor runs the risk of getting sick by treating diseased patients, but continues to do so because of his desire to help those who are suffering, in a similar way the bona fide spiritual master, because of his compassion on the suffering souls of this world, is willing to experience difficulties in his compassionate endeavor to rescue the suffering souls of this world from the repetition of birth and death.

You should get initiated. Simply you must agree to chant at least sixteen rounds daily of the Hare Krishna mahamantra along with the strict avoidance of illicit sex, meat eating, intoxication, and gambling. Initiation is required for going back to Godhead. It means that you are solidly committed to serving Krishna 24 hours a day under the expert guidance of the bona fide spiritual master. Krishna orders that unless you are the devotee of His devotee you are not His devotee. Therefore to be devoted to Krishna, you must surrender to the bona fide spiritual master.

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.

Connecting with Krishna

In this world we try to enjoy in so many ways. Some even go so far as to change their gender to try to enjoy in that way. But no matter what we may do to try to enjoy here, we can never be successful because this is not our natural environment. We are creatures of the spiritual world, not of this material world. All we have to do to become unlimitedly happy is get back to our original home in the spiritual world. This is easily done by chanting Lord Sri Krishna's name with love. It's as simple as that.

Question: Devotee Serves Everyone?

Dear Srila Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to you!
All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

How to understand a statement in the purport to Bhagavad-gita 2.41 that by acting in Krishna consciousness one can render the highest service to everyone? Srila Prabhupada in this connection gives the analogy of a tree which when watered to the root, automatically distributes water to leaves and branches. In other words, if Krishna is satisfied by one's actions, then everyone will be satisfied.

I do not understand the word, "everyone". First of all, looking practically, what effect does one's devotional service, performed in Germany, has to do with, let's say, a reptile sleeping in a swamp somewhere in Japan? And secondly, even if one has a direct contact with someone, that person may not be satisfied at all or even hostile. There is the example of Haridasa Thakura, who was beaten in twenty-two marketplaces because he was chanting Hare Krishna, and also the example of Prahlada Maharaja, whose demoniac father tried to kill him in so many ways because he was a devotee. So what does it mean that everyone is satisfied?

Please kindly explain.

Your student,

Answer: He Spiritualizes the Entire Universe

From: Sri Vrindavana Dhama, India

My Dear Ruta,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

What this means is that the highest self-interest of all living beings is served. That highest self-interest is being delivered back to home, back to Godhead.

When one fully surrenders to Lord Sri Krishna his mere presence in this world has an uplifting, spiritualizing impact on the entire universe. The presence of the pure devotee is the greatest blessing even upon the lower species and the demons because knowingly or unknowingly everyone is benefited by the pure devotional mood and activities of those who are Krishna conscious.

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.

Srila Prabhupada's Disappearance Day

Today is a day of great lamentation. This is the day when my beloved spiritual master, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, departed from this world in 1977. He is greatly missed. When he was here any controversies or deviations within our movement could immediately be resolved simply by his word. Now even though some of his instructions are being regularly disobeyed, nobody, not even the GBC, is able to do anything about it and the deviations continue. For this reason I cry deeply on this day of his departure praying that by His Divine Grace the deviations that have crept into his movement can be rectified as soon as possible so that his movement can very soon lead the entire world out of chaos.

Question: No Feeling to Take Initiation

I am Chandra Prakash Maurya from Mumbai, India. I am following Krishna consciousness and ISKCON since 2007, chanting rounds, doing service as per my capacity, and also reading many of your articles.

Now I have many question seeing situation near me:

1) Still I have no feeling to accept a guru or take initiation. I don't know why. I am happy with Srila Prabhupada.

2) Why is there so much pain? My mother is a very good devotee. She has given many donations and is a good devotee. But she is now suffering with myeloma (a kind of incurable cancer). She is in very, very bad pain. After seeing her in so much pain I have many questions: What is use of this life? Why we are here? Does God exist?

Please guide me.

Regards.

Chandra Prakash Maurya

Answer: That's Why You Are Confused

My Dear Chandra,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

You are so-called happy with your own imaginary Srila Prabhupada, not tasting transcendental bliss by following the real Srila Prabhupada who instructs us as follows in the Nectar of Devotion Introduction:

"The connection with the spiritual master is called initiation. From the date of initiation by the spiritual master, the connection between Krishna and a person cultivating Krishna consciousness is established. Without initiation by a bona fide spiritual master, the actual connection with Krishna consciousness is never performed.”

Furthermore Srila Prabhupada told us in November of 1977 that he would not be initiating more disciples, that henceforward the new devotees coming to ISKCON would the disciples of his disciples.

So if you really are a true follower of Srila Prabhupada, you will strictly follow his instructions instead of your own nonsense mental concoctions.

It is because you have not actually connected with Srila Prabhupada that you are confused and wondering what is the use of life and if God really exists.

I am truly sorry to hear about your mother’s pain, and I hope that she can recover. However, pain is something we all experience, especially as we get older. We can have peace in spite of our pain by always remembering that whatever pain a devotee suffers is a minimization of what he actually deserves due to his previous sinful activities. And that pain is actually a blessing in disguise to help the devotee intensify within his heart his loving relationship with Krishna. In other words, the devotee uses pain as a springboard to increase his feelings of transcendental bliss. In this way he totally conquers over pain.

We exist to have a loving relationship with Krishna, to get out of the nasty prison house of material existence and get back to our original, all-blissful in the spiritual world.

Transcendental Bliss at Sakara Gully

On 21 October 2017 we were blessed by Lord Krishna with a visit to one of His places of transcendental pastimes in Sri Vrindavana Dhama. We went to Sakara Gully (Sankari Kor), that narrow gully on the foot path between Varsana Town and Citra Village. It was here in the narrow passageway that Krishna would block the path to prevent Radharani and her gopi girlfriends from passing through unless they paid a tax of yogurt. If they would not pay the tax, Krishna would break their clay yogurt pots. While in the gully we stopped for a few minutes and I told the devotees about these wonderful pastimes of Krishna that took place here 5,000 years ago. Or course, these pastimes as still going on here for those who have the eyes to see them. In remembrance of this pastime some local village boys demanded that we pay a tax for passing through the gully and we obliged by tossing them a few coins.

Question: Incarnation and Expansion?

What is the difference between an incarnation and an expansion of Krishna?

Your servant,
Vanessa

Answer: Incarnation is God Himself

Srila Prabhupada has answered your question as follows:

"There are two kinds of expansions of the Lord. One kind of expansion is called Visnu-tattva. Visnu-tattva means the expansion, they are as equal as the God Himself. And there are expansions which are called the jiva-tattva, the living entities. This expansion of the living entities, they are not equally powerful, but the expansion of Visnu-tattva is equally powerful, as good as God Himself. So the incarnation of God means the expansion which is as good as God Himself. That is called incarnation."

So the incarnation is God Himself, and the expansion may or may not be God.

Don't Cheat Yourself

Don't cheat yourself. You are an eternal spiritual being full of bliss and full of knowledge. So do not make the mistake of misidentifying yourself with your temporary material body, which is just a garment you are temporarily wearing at the present moment. Just as you would not think that you are your shirt because it is a garment you are wearing, in the same way you should not think that you are your body because it is simply a garment that you are wearing. Misidentification with your temporary material body will relegate you to a life of ignorance and misery, while identification with your actual spirit-self will bless you with a life full of bliss and knowledge. What does it mean to completely surrender oneself to Krishna? Does it have to do with the way we deal with people, ourselves, the way we act, or what we think every moment?

Please help this soul.

Always seeking Your blessings.

Bhargavi

Answer: Fully Dovetailed with Krishna

Complete surrender to Krishna means that in all times, places, and circumstances one always thinks, speaks, and acts in a way taught by the spiritual master that is fully pleasing to Lord Sri Krishna. It includes everything that we think, speak, and do in every situation for all of eternity.

Transcendental Minutemen Always Do the Needful

Krishna's devotee is a transcendental minuteman. He is willing to do at a moment's notice with no prior warning whatever needs to be done in Krishna's service. It does not matter what he was doing or what he was planning to do. If all of sudden something needs to be done, he is willing to lay everything aside and immediately do the needful. This is what it means to be fully surrendered to Krishna, and it makes the devotee totally ecstatic.

Question: Chant in Mind or With Mouth?

Hare Krishna.
My respectful pranam to Srila Gurudeva,

Kindly advise me whether the Hare Krishna Mahamantra Japa should be done through mind or mouth. Also how many mala I can start with.

With respectful obeisances,

Your student,
Alekh

Answer: Both

The Hare Krishna mahamantra is meant to be audibly chanted. Each syllable should be distinctly chanted and heard. This clear chanting will facilitate the mind’s being 100% absorbed in this ultimate of all mantras.

Some devotees, myself included, started chanting 16 rounds of Hare Krishna japa mala from day one. This is the ideal standard, if you can do this. If not, you can do some number of rounds less than 16 and increase up to 16 or more as soon as it is possible.

Conquering Over Lust

Lust is the all-devouring enemy here in this material world. It keeps us locked eternally in the horrendously horrible cycle of birth and death traversing the 8,400,000 species again and again. There is no absolutely no reason to be carried by this dirty perversion of pure love masquerading itself as pure love. Real love is unlimitedly beautiful, a thrill at every moment. Real love means to love God and to love everyone and everything else in relation to God. This is the only thing that gives true satisfaction to the self.

Suffering and ecstasy are inter-related in this way: The more you are Krishna conscious, the more you are ecstatic and the less you are suffering. And the less you are Krishna conscious, the more you are suffering and the less you are ecstatic.

The Secret of Enjoying Unlimited Happiness

The secret of how to always enjoy ever-increasing happiness is that instead of trying to be the enjoyer, try to always give pleasure to that person who is the Supreme Enjoyer, Krishna or God. Just as when you water the root of a tree all the leaves and branches are nourished, when you give your loving service to Krishna or God, you become satisfied because you are perfectly giving your love to all living beings within all of existence. What could be more satisfying or thrilling than this?

Question: First Birth as Lord Brahma?

Dear Gurudeva,

All glories to Srila Prabhupada and all glories to you and Gurumata.

Now that I am an aspiring disciple, what should I call you?

Did we first became Brahma after we fell down from the spiritual world?

Answer: Yes

You may call me "Srila Gurudeva."

Srila Prabhupada describes how we took our first birth as Lord Brahma in his purport to Srimad Bhagavatam 9.24.58 as follows:

"Both the Lord and the living entity, being qualitatively spirit soul, have the tendency for peaceful enjoyment, but when the part of the Supreme Personality of Godhead unfortunately wants to enjoy independently, without Krsna, he is put into the material world, where he begins his life as Brahma and is gradually degraded to the status of an ant or a worm in stool."

Today's Thought:

Praying for Krishna's Blessings

Today, the tenth day of the most holy month of Karttika, is the day when all over the world my disciples will be celebrating the day of my birth in this material world in my present body. I was born on 7 November 1947 in St. Louis, Missouri USA. For religious observances Vaisnavas go by the lunar calendar instead of the solar calendar. That's why my birthday is being celebrated on 14 October instead of 7 November. In 1947 the tenth day of Karttika in St. Louis was on 7 November. Since my first birthday was in 1947 today is my 71st birthday, and thus even though I am eternal, my present body is 70 years old.

Being born in a Christian family I was taught to believe in God, not as that person to whom I must surrender, but as that person whom I should approach to fulfill my material desires. Such a rudimentary level of God consciousness did not satisfy me. So in 1971 I sought to attain the pure, divine consciousness of complete surrender to the will of God, as taught by Lord Jesus in the Bible, but which is not understood by most Christians.

This desire to be a perfect follower of the teachings of Jesus brought me to Krishna consciousness and to becoming the initiated disciple of His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, the Founder-Acarya of ISKCON, the International Society for Krishna Consciousness. As Srila Prabhupada's disciple, on his order, my life is now fully dedicated for trying to bring about a complete respiritualization of the entire human society as soon as possible. Especially on this day of my appearance I am thus begging and praying for Srila Prabhupada's blessings, Lord Caitanya's blessings, and Lord Krishna's blessings that I can now be fully successful in executing my duty of bringing about a complete respiritualization of the entire universal society as soon as possible.

What diet and what daily routine would you suggest?

Your Student,

Answer: Regulative Principles and Initiation

Take only Krishna prasadam as your food. Krishna prasadam means fruits, vegetables, grains, and dairy products offered to Lord Sri Krishna with love a devotion. No meat, fish, eggs, onions, garlic or mushroom should be offered to Krishna and thus should not eaten by you. You should rise early every morning at least 1 and half hours before sunrise and chant at least 16 round daily of the Hare Krishna mahamantra on japa mala beads. You should also strictly avoid illicit sex, meat eating, intoxication, and gambling. When fixed in the above for at least one year you should take initiation from the bona fide spiritual, and then under his loving guidance prepare yourself for going back to home, back to Godhead.

Bathing in the River Yamuna

11 October 2017--Today we were blessed with the most auspicious opportunity of bathing in the River Yamuna. In this regard Srila Prabhupada writes as follows:

"The Lord sanctified the River Yamuna from the beginning of His transcendental pastimes in the world. While His father Vasudeva was crossing the Yamuna with the baby Lord Krishna for a safe place at Gokula on the other bank of the river from Mathura, the Lord fell down in the river, and by the dust of His lotus feet the river at once became sanctified. It is especially mentioned herein that Maharaja Pariksit took shelter of that particular river which is beautifully flowing, carrying the dust of the lotus feet of Lord Krishna, mixed with tulasi leaves. Lord Krishna's lotus feet are always besmeared with the tulasi leaves, and thus as soon as His lotus feet contact the water of the Ganges and the Yamuna, the rivers become at once sanctified. The Lord, however, contacted the River Yamuna more than the Ganges. According to the Varaha Purana, as quoted by Srila Jiva Gosvami, there is no difference between the water of the Ganges and the Yamuna, but when the water of the Ganges is sanctified one hundred times, it is called the Yamuna."

In this regard Srila Prabhupada also writes as follows:

"If possible, one should bathe in the waters of the Ganges or Yamuna, or in the absence of the Ganges and Yamuna one may bathe in the water of the sea. This is an item of austerity. Our Krishna consciousness movement has therefore established two very large centers, one in Vrindavana and another in Mayapura, Navadvipa. There one may bathe in the Ganges or Yamuna, chant the Hare Krishna mantra and thus become perfect and return home, back to Godhead."

So we were very much blessed today with the opportunity to bathe in the most sacred River Yamuna.

Question: How to Reach Krishna?

My Dear Respected Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble obeisances
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

I would like to love such a person as Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who comes millennium after millennium just to call me back to His transcendental abode, who speaks the Bhagavad-gita again and again just to let me know how much He misses me there. I just don't know how to reach Him.

Sincerely,

Answer: Call His Name With Love

All you have to do to reach Him is call His name with love. It’s as simple as that.

Plus, since He is fully present in a photograph of a painting of Him, you can make an altar and offer Him all of your food (no meat, fish, eggs, onions, and garlic). Bow down to Him regularly and chant His names as much as possible. He will become fully present in your apartment. By associating with Him every day in a mood of loving service you will become a pure devotee, and He will take you back to His eternal abode, your original home.

Today's Thought:

Why People Take Intoxicants

People take intoxicants because they want to enter into another state of mind beyond their present suffering existence. They can't stand their present miserable situation and they are thus trying to find something better by getting intoxicated. However, what they don't realize is that their miseries are all simply due to their misidentification of their actual self with the material body, which is only a temporary, deteriorating covering of the self, a costume that their true self, the spirit-soul within the body, is only wearing and utilizing right now. The end result of intoxication is that because it is a stimulation of their material body, the act of getting intoxicated increases one's bodily consciousness and thus increases one's suffering instead of decreasing it. Although there may a temporary impression of relief from the suffering, the end result is an increase of suffering. So the conclusion is that if they will stop misidentifying with their miserable material body and instead identify with their actual self, the all-blissful spirit-soul within, they will enter into a state of pure unadulterated, ever-increasing bliss. This is accomplished by absorbing oneself in one's original constitutional nature of loving service to Lord Sri Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

If you are not already doing this, try this today. You'll absolutely love it!

Question: Is this Fair?

We fell down from the spiritual world before billions of years ago and had millions of births, but we only got the guidance to surrender to Krishna just before 5,000 years ago. Moreover, only Srila Prabhupada clarified the meaning of the Bhagavad-gita just 50 years ago. Thus the message of Krishna remained dormant during such a long time for all of mankind. This naturally led to our compounded impurities and miseries. Is this fair?

Thank You.

With Regards,

Golok Das

Answer: God is More than Fair

Throughout all of eternity Krishna has always been fully available for anyone who sincerely wants to find Him. For example, Lord Sri Krishna personally revealed His sublime teachings millions of years ago to the sun god, Vivasvan, and Lord Caitanya revealed these sublime teachings 500 years to thousands of devotees. Krishna is in the heart of every living being, and when that living being sincerely wants to find Him, that all-merciful Krishna gives him full facility to revive his lost loving relationship with his most beloved Lord. So the conclusion is that Krishna or God is more than fair. He is an ocean of unlimited compassion upon all living beings.

The value of rebuilding the place with electricity, plumbing, etc. could be anywhere from USD 150,000 to USD 350.000. We are awaiting for a professional appraisal, and will post it here. The devotees of Puerto Rico need your help to continue preaching Krishna consciousness in Puerto Rico. Fixing the structural damage is one urgent and important aspect. However, the situation in the country is extremely difficult. Food is scarce and gas lines are 80-100 cars long. Very few places, if any, have electricity.

ISKCON Rio Piedras Preaching Center in San Juan

The preaching center was flooded with 1 meter of water, damaging all the drywalls, doors, interior and electrical, etc. Most of the interior will have to be replaced. The local congregation is not wealthy, and is challenged by their own expenses for reparation of personal property. We humbly appeal to the greater devotee community, our friends, members and supporters, to help in this moment of dire need.

Question: How Human Become Animals?

What actions make any human to take birth as an animal or plant in his next birth? Please explain by giving some concrete examples.

Arun

Answer: By Living Like Animals

From: Noida, India

My Dear Arun,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Human life is meant for spiritual realization, not for sense gratification, which is the business of the animals. Therefore a human being who does not utilize his human life for self realization instead using it only for concentrated and extended material sense gratification will surely take birth as an animal in his next life, not as a human being. And if he is very sinful, he will go even lower to the plant kingdom in his next life.

One time Indra, the king of heaven, offended his spiritual master. Because of this offense he was forced to take birth as a hog. So if even Indra can take birth as a hog, just consider how anyone who is sinful can enter into the animal kingdom.

Srila Prabhupada explains that those who are envious of the Lord and His devotees are thrown into the species of abominable life; life after life, and that because such fools are unable to remember the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and they continue going down and down.

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.

Your ever well-wisher,

Sankarshan Das Adhikari

Today's Thought:

Never Feel Discouraged

There is no reason to ever feel discouraged or depressed in any situation because Krishna loves you unlimitedly and is doing everything possible to bring you back to your liberated position in His transcendental pastimes as soon as possible. He really, truly cares about you more than you can even begin to imagine and is profoundly aware of even the most miniscule details of your situation and the millions upon millions of lifetimes you have gone through in your foolish attempt to try to enjoy separately from Him. So take advantage of His inconceivable, unlimited mercy fully manifested through His transparent via medium, the bona fide spiritual master, and make your life perfect by regaining your position as His eternal associate in His transcendental pastimes in that unlimitedly wondrous spiritual sky.

Question: Second Initiation Required for Liberation?

Hare Krishna, Dear Master! Please accept my obeisances.

Help me find an answer for this question: If a person accepts the a spiritual master and receives first initiation, but after some time his spiritual master passes away, he leaves his body, does this mean that the disciple won’t be able to receive second initiation and thus will not be able to receive liberation in this incarnation?

And one more question: How should woman act correctly according to her dharma, her duty? Should take shelter of the bona fide spiritual master or should she just serve her husband?

My respects to you!

Svetlana

Answer: First Initiation Sufficient for Liberation

From: Noida, India

My Dear Svetlana,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

If one strictly follows his initiation vows, first initiation is sufficient in itself for liberation. If his spiritual master has departed and he is qualified for second initiation, he can receive second initiation from another spiritual master. This does not change who is his spiritual master. The spiritual master who gave him first initiation remains as his spiritual master for all of eternity.

A woman’s duty is to take shelter of the bona fide spiritual master through the process of initiation and fully dedicate herself heart and soul for serving her spiritual master for all of eternity.

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.

Your ever well-wisher,

Sankarshan Das Adhikari
