Today's Thought:

Take this Process Seriously

Our present position is very precarious. We are caught up in the cycle of birth and death suffering like anything in the threefold miseries: miseries caused by the mind and body, miseries caused by other living beings, and miseries caused by natural disasters. Unless we take to the process of spiritual emancipation very seriously we will remain captivated in this hellish, nightmarish situation. Therefore we should take the awakening of our dormant Krishna consciousness as the primary goal of life in order to become liberated from this material prison and return back to our original home in the spiritual sky.

Question: Meditating on Guru During Japa?

Hare Krishna.

Dear Gurudeva and Guru Mataji,

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

When I chant inattentive japa, I find it difficult to meditate on Sri Krishna. My question is: Is meditating on the Spiritual Master the same as meditating on Sri Krishna when one chants japa? When I chant japa I like to remember the spiritual master's words and instructions.

Thank you very much!

Your happy servant,

Javiera

Answer: Remembering Guru is Very Good

Srila Prabhupada says that while worshipping Krishna is good, worshipping the devotee of Krishna is better. So your idea of worshipping the spiritual master is a first class idea. So if while chanting japa your mind spontaneously remembers your Guru Maharaja and his instructions that is very nice. But then because your Guru Maharaja has ordered you to fix your mind on Krishna’s holy names you should again bring your mind back to absorption in Krishna’s unlimitedly sweet holy names. This is how you will very much please your Guru Maharaja.

It's a Mad, Mad, Mad World

We live in a crazy world. The leaders are crazy, and all the people are crazy. Everything here is crazy. When we try to enlighten these crazy fools to save them from their craziness, they think that we are crazy. What can be done in such a helpless situation? We have to take shelter of Krishna. He will help us to be sane in this crazy world. And He will help us save some of these crazy souls and make them sane. We want to bring them all back to sanity. This is the mission givne to us by Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu.

Today's Thought:

Radhastami--Appearance Day of Srimati Radharani

On Radhastami in 1973 in London Srila Prabhupada wonderfully spoke as follows:

"Therefore in Vrindavan you will see all devotees, they will address one another, "Jaya Radhe." Still. Because they know that "If Radharani is pleased, if I can please Radharani..." Radharani is presented, the original pleasure potency, always absorbed in thought of Krishna. So anyone who comes before Radharani to serve Krishna, oh, She becomes so pleased, "Oh, here is a devotee of Krishna." She immediately recommends, "Krishna, oh, here is a devotee. He is better than Me." This is Radharani. I may be a, not devotee. I may be most fallen rascal. But if I try to reach Krishna through Radharani, then my business is successful. Therefore we should worship Radharani first. That is our business. Instead of offering directly one flower to Krishna, you just put it in the hands of Radharani: "My mother Radharani, Jagan-mata, if you kindly take this flower and offer it to Krishna." "Oh," Radharani says, "Oh, you have brought a flower?" Krishna said, patram puspam phalam toyam yo me bhaktya prayacchati [Bg. 9.26], but don't try to offer Krishna directly. Just offer through Radharani. It will be very much appreciated by Radharani.

"So this is our philosophy, to please Krishna through Radharani, and just today is the auspicious day of Radharani appearance. So we should offer puspanjali and pray to Radharani that "Radharani, kindly be merciful and tell about me to Your Krishna. To Your Krishna. Krishna is Yours." Krishna, Radha-Krishna. Krishna is not independent. Krishna is Radharani's property. So you have to approach Krishna through Radharani. That is, today is the auspicious day. Worship Radharani very nicely and be happy." --end of quote--

How wonderfully Srila Prabhupada has blessed us!

Question: How Did You Come to Krishna Consciousness

Please, teacher, guide me and show me the right way. Please tell me what to do.

How did you start your spiritual path back home to our Lord Krishna? How did you become a spiritual teacher?

And please teach me what is the right way to communicate with you, if I am doing something wrong.

Hare Krishna
All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

Maria

Answer: This Is How It Happened.

I was very happy to meet you the other day in Sofia, and I am very pleased with your spiritual progress. Kindly gradually increase your chanting from 3 rounds per day to 16 rounds per day. This will give you great happiness.

Regarding how I came to Krishna consciousness, here is how it unfolded:

As a college youth I wanted to know the meaning of life, but nobody could tell me. Then I heard about becoming self-realized and wanted to attain it. After being disappointed with several bogus gurus, a friend introduced me to the Hare Krishna mantra, which was indeed amazingly wonderful and mystical. Not feeling any connection with a career and so-called material happiness I decided to deny everything of this material world and accept instead the career of a beggar/renunciate in India. However on the way to India I realized that the perfection of denial was to deny denial itself and embrace instead a reality transcendental to this material existence. So I then embraced the mission of bringing a spiritual revolution to planet earth. Instead of going to India I adopted the lifestyle of a singer/songwriter in the USA for the purpose of sparking off a global spiritual revolution. However, after spending two years in this pursuit, I realized, "How I can spiritualize the world if I haven’t even spiritualized myself?" So I prayed to God to guide me what to do. Krishna kindly answered my prayer by sending His Holiness Vishnujana Swami to my town, Austin, Texas, USA. And this wonderful sannyasi inspired me to become an initiated disciple of Srila Prabhupada, who ordered us, his disciples, to become gurus and deliver the world from illusion. So now in pursuance of Srila Prabhupada’s order this is my life: to be a guru and to try to make the whole world Krishna conscious.

Since you are accepting as your spiritual master you can respectfully address me as "Srila Gurudeva."

Devotees are Greatly Pained

Because of their intense compassion the devotees of Lord Sri Krishna are greatly pained to see the suffering of the souls who are caught up in the cycle of birth and death here in this material world. Therefore they dedicate their lives fully for as much possible making the world Krishna conscious. And because of their mood of compassion, Krishna bestows His special mercy upon His devotees

Question: What Does Prabhupada Mean?

Srila Prabhupada says in a purport of Chapter 12 of the Bhagavad-gita that one can attain perfection simply by assisting the devotees of ISKCON. What did he mean by this?

Your student

Answer: Carefully Read and You Will Understand

Srila Prabhupada makes it crystal clear. Here is what he states:

"One who is not able even to practice the regulative principles of bhakti-yoga, under the guidance of a spiritual master, can still be drawn to this perfectional stage by working for the Supreme Lord. How to do this work has already been explained in the fifty-fifth verse of the Eleventh Chapter. One should be sympathetic to the propagation of Krishna consciousness. There are many devotees who are engaged in the propagation of Krishna consciousness, and they require help. So, even if one cannot directly practice the regulative principles of bhakti-yoga, he can try to help such work. Every endeavor requires land, capital, organization and labor. Just as in business one requires a place to stay, some capital to use, some labor and some organization to expand, so the same is required in the service of Krishna. The only difference is that in materialism one works for sense gratification. The same work, however, can be performed for the satisfaction of Krishna, and that is spiritual activity. If one has sufficient money, he can help in building an office or temple for propagating Krishna consciousness. Or he can help with publications. There are various fields of activity, and one should be interested in such activities. If one cannot sacrifice the results of his activities, the same person can still sacrifice some percentage to propagate Krishna consciousness. This voluntary service to the cause of Krishna consciousness will help one to rise to a higher state of love for God, whereupon one becomes perfect."

Carefully read this and you will understand.

Beyond the Turbulence of this Material World

This material world is no fit place for a gentleman's living, and there is not much more to be said in this connection. In other words, it is a hellish nightmare even though it sometimes appears to be quite pleasant. The wonderful thing about Krishna consciousness is that it situates you beyond the disturbance, beyond the turbulence, because you become reconnected with your eternal loving relationship with Lord Sri Krishna, the most stupendously amazing Supreme Personality of Godhead. This relationship is so sublime and so beautiful that you become totally satisfied by it. What is happening in the material world becomes immaterial because it no longer personally pinches you. One however does feel greatly pinched to see the sufferings of all those who are not Krishna conscious. Thus he dedicates his entire life for trying to save them from the excruciating clutches of birth and death. This dedication makes him most dear to Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, Lord Sri Krishna appearing in His most merciful form as His own devotee.

Don't Torture Yourself

Don't torture yourself, punish yourself, by not taking to Krishna consciousness. You are naturally Krishna's pure devotee, so why do anything else besides fully surrendering to Krishna? Nothing else makes any sense. Why would a fish want to suffer trying to live happily on the land, which is impossible for him, when he could be naturally and easily enjoying life while living in the water? Heading Out Today

Today we are heading out on another lecture tour. This tour will take us to England, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Finland, and India. We pray to Krishna that we will be successful in our mission to awaken the sleeping souls of this material world to Krishna because this is the only thing that can make them truly happy. All other pursuits besides Krishna consciousness are totally futile because they will simply ultimately make the people more miserable and frustrated. This is why we need, for the benefit of all, to awaken the whole world to Krishna consciousness.

Question: Any Way Besides Surrender?

It's difficult to surrender to Krishna because there are so many conditions. The don'ts are too difficult. Is there any other way out of this material world besides surrender to Krishna?

Your student

Answer: You Could Suffer Perpetually

Surrender to Krishna is not required if one is content to remain perpetually entangled in the cycle of birth, death, old age, and disease. So you should analyze what is more difficult: adopting a godly life or suffering birth, death, old age, and disease.

Everything Will Be Alright

This material world is a hellish nightmare, although sometimes we foolishly take it to be paradise. But ultimately the horrid nature of material existence reveals itself. And but if we take complete shelter of Krishna and our spiritual master, the bona fide representative of Krishna, everything will be alright. Upon leaving our present material body we will not take birth again here in this ghastly material existence. Dandavat pranam Gurudeva,

How is your health? I am not able to control my mental stress in spite of chanting the mahamantra. I am fogged with so many mental problems and some times breathing becomes heavy. Kindly help me.

Your obedient servant.

Manian

Answer: Intensify Your Focus

Presently I am getting improvement in my health, but it will be quite some time before I fully recover.

If you are not chanting at least 16 rounds daily, you are not chanting enough. If this is the case, you must increase your chanting to at least 16 rounds daily. And if you are already chanting at least 16 rounds daily, you need to chant with more intensity to burn away the multi-layers of material contamination that are presently polluting your mind.

You must be patient and determined. You have been caught up in the cycle of birth and death for millions and billions of lifetimes. To come out of it is not easy. So do not expect instant liberation.

Question: How Through Guru One Realizes God?

My dear Srila Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Your video for the day is becoming like a spiritual compass, guiding me to do more for Srila Prabhupada. Last month I began to reread Srimad Bhagavatam more scrutinizingly. It's packed with so much nectar. I came across this which really inspired me:

"Person Bhagavatam is the self-realized bona fide spiritual master, and through him only can one understand the lessons of Bhagavatam in order to receive the desired result."1.3.40, purport

Can you kindly give me some instructions relating to this? I remember you and Guru Mataji so much while reading Srila Prabhupada's books.

I hope you are well, Srila Gurudeva. You always appear blissful in the videos but I know your health is fragile. Will you still be coming to London later this month?

I pray this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.

Your servant,

Pritha devi dasi

Answer: By Loving Obedience

By rigidly keep your initiation vows you will be solidly connected with the spiritual master and will thus be blessed with proper understanding of the Srimad Bhagavatam.

In this connection Srila Prabhupada describes as follows in his purport to Srimad Bhagavatam 3.22.7:

"This combination, the instruction of the spiritual master and the faithful execution of the instruction by the disciple, makes the entire process perfect. Srila Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura describes in his explanation of the verse in Bhagavad-gita, vyavasayatmika buddhih, that one who wants to be certain to achieve spiritual success must take the instruction from the spiritual master as to what his particular function is. He should faithfully try to execute that particular instruction and should consider that his life and soul. The faithful execution of the instruction which he receives from the spiritual master is the only duty of a disciple, and that will bring him perfection. One should be very careful to receive the message from the spiritual master through the ears and execute it faithfully. That will make one's life successful."

As my health has improved, we will be coming to London as planned on our way to Bulgaria.

Question: One Round of Japa is Sufficient?

If we chant just one round daily of the Hare Krishna mantra, will it be effective for our achieving spiritual perfection?

Ritu

Answer: At Least Sixteen Rounds Required

Chanting one round of the Hare Krishna mahamantra daily on japa mala beads is a good beginning. This is 108 repetitions of this most sacred of all sound vibrations.

When we chant it we are begging Krishna that we can fully surrender unto His instructions. In the Bhagavad-gita Krishna instructs us to chant His name 24 hours a day. Therefore the perfection of chanting the Hare Krishna mahamantra is to chant it constantly 24 hours daily. Since there are so many distractions in the modern age: work, study, etc, ISKCON Founder-Acarya, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada has told us that we will get the benefit of constant chanting if we will purely chant the Hare Krishna mahamantra at least 16 rounds daily.

Therefore kindly increase your chanting now or gradually to at least 16 rounds daily. This will bring you unlimited peace and happiness.

Saved from the Ocean of Birth and Death

The devotee understands that on his own strength it is not possible for him to escape the cycle of birth and death. This can be compared to a person who is out in the water in the middle of the ocean where it is not possible to have enough strength to swim for the shore. The only hope for such a person to survive is if he is rescued by someone in a boat or a helicopter. Similarly the only hope for a conditioned soul who is drowning in the ocean of birth and death is to be rescued by the Lord or the Lord's devotee.

Question: How to Save My Parents?

As my parents are against me I am not able to chant the holy name, Swamiji. My Dad doesn't let me chant. He even kept the japa beads in a temple. He took away my Krishna Book. I don't know what to do, Swamiji. But my wish is to bring my parents into Krishna consciousness. Please tell me some ways to bring them into Krishna consciousness. Still I'm praying to Krishna. But there is no more progress. And my Dad says that people who worship Krishna will lose everything they have in their life. Recently my leg is fractured like anything before. He again says that it is the gift of Krishna for the chanting. Sometimes I think that vaishnava aparadha causes such problems. So I request you to show me a path.

By an insignificant soul

Answer: Just Focus on Saving Yourself

I am very sorry that your parents are against Krishna consciousness. According to the Vedic wisdom it is the duty of the parents to give Krishna consciousness to their children. It is thus sad that your parents have lost all touch with their own Indian culture. The best you can do is to chant Hare Krishna secretly as much as possible. Strictly avoid eating meat, fish, eggs, onions, and garlic, and mentally offer everything to Krishna before you eat. Always beg Krishna for pure devotional service, and He will always reciprocate with your prayers. Don’t worry now about making your parents Krishna conscious. Just focus on developing your own Krishna consciousness bringing yourself all the way to the stage of pure bhakti.

Problem: I Cannot Focus on My Career

Hare Krishna.

I read the Bhagavad-gita; I chant japa; I take prasadam; and I listen to Krishna conscious lectures. But I am not able to focus on my career and am confused about what to do. I feel that this world is simply a place of suffering and therefore I cannot concentrate on my japa. Also I cannot sleep at night. Please help me to concentrate on japa, Krishna lila, Bhagavad-gita, and Srimad Bhagavatam. I am unable to cross this ocean of unlimited sufferings here in this material world.

Thanks,
Hare Krishna.
Your servant,
Aditya

Answer: Offer It to Krishna

You have very nicely realized that this place where we live now is simply a world of suffering. Your realization is correct as confirmed by Krishna in the Bhagavad-gita. But by taking to Krishna consciousness you are liberated from this world of suffering and empowered to liberate others also. Thus there is no cause for lamentation. Rather it is a cause for great celebration.

Regarding your career, Krishna says in the Bhagavad-gita that whatever you do you should do it for Him. So if you offer your career to Krishna by engaging your earnings as far as possible in His service, you career activities will nicely become another part of your devotional activities. In this way you will become supremely happy even while you are at work.

All Glories to Srila Prabhupada

Srila Prabhupada saved me. I was a super idealistic youth during the 60's and early 70's, America's counter-cultural era. My life was dedicated to bringing about a love and peace revolution on planet earth. But the problem was that due to my being entangled in material sense gratification I was lacking these things myself. How could I bring love and peace to the world when I do not have these myself? But due to the sweet kindness of His Holiness Vishnujana Swami I was able to appreciate the necessity of becoming a disciple of the bona fide spiritual master. Thus I was accepted by Srila Prabhupada as his disciple on 12 August 1971 and was given the name 'Sankarshan Das.' Years later I read in Srila Prabhupada's books that 'Sankarshan' means 'one who attracts everyone'. I was delighted with this discovery because my goal in life is to attract the whole world to Krishna consciousness.

My Dear Ineta,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Thank you for your Janmastami well-wishes!

I am very happy that you have appreciated Our Sweet Lord.

You have rightly understood my actual identity. You have not been fooled by my 70 year body. I am actually an eternal youth, one of Krishna’s associates in the spiritual world. And you are too! If you will follow me, I will take you back to your eternal youthful identity. To hell with politics!

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.

Janmastami--Most Holy Appearance Day of Lord Sri Krishna

Here is an excerpt from a lecture by Srila Prabhupada in which he talks about Janmastami:

So Krishna takes birth. That is Janmastami. So if anyone tries to understand why the Aja, the Unborn, takes birth, janma karma... And God, Krishna, who has nothing to do... That is the Vedic information. Na tasya karyam karanam ca vidyate. Why He has to do? Actually He hasn't got to do anything. He has to enjoy only. Just like we see the Deity Krishna is not working in the factory as a factory manager. He's enjoying the company of Radharani. We have to work. If we enjoy with our so-called Radharani, then we'll starve to death. We have to work. But God is not like that. Na tasya karyam karanam ca vidyate. Na tat-samas cabhyadhikas ca drsyate. These are the informations from Vedas, Upanisads, that He has nothing to do. Yes. That is real God. If God has to work, God has to do something, then what kind of God He is? Here, the so-called imitation Gods, even a rich man, he does not do anything. And why God will work? Therefore God comes... He's aja, unborn. He comes, janma, karma, He works also. Just like Krishna. He worked ordinary cowherd's boy. He worked as ordinary politician. He worked as ordinary philosopher, left the instruction of Bhagavad-gita and so many other instructions, sublime instructions.

So one has to understand that why the unborn takes birth. One who hasn't got to do anything, why He comes as a human being and works? Janma karma me divyam. These are all transcendental subject matter. These are not ordinary things. Krishna's coming, Krishna's working, Krishna's fighting, Krishna's loving, they're all transcendental subject matter. Aprakrta. So janma karma me divyam yo janati tattvatah. If anyone simply understands this subject matter, why Krishna takes birth, why Krishna works as ordinary man -- these are all transcendental subject matter -- then he becomes free. Tyaktva deham punar janma naiti [Bg. 4.9]. Simply by understanding Krishna, about His work, about His birth. Simply if we can understand. The Bhagavad-gita is there. You can read and try to understand Bhagavad-gita as it is. The result will be, tyaktva deham punar janma naiti [Bg. 4.9]. Then after giving up this body, he never takes birth in this material world. Punar janma. Punar janma means within this material world. In the spiritual world there is no janma, there is no death. Punar janma naiti. Then where...? He's finished? No. Mam eti: "He comes to Me, back to home, back to Godhead." This is perfection.

(This lecture was given on June 25, 1973 in Mayapur, West Bengal, India)

Let us all therefore remember how Krishna has blessed us unlimitedly by appearing in this world.

Hare Krishna, Srila Gurudeva.

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.
All glories to Srila Gurudeva.

Srila Gurudeva, tomorrow is Krishna Janmastami, the most auspicious day ever. The day I've been waiting for. The saddest part is I cannot attend the event in the nearest ISKCON because of my parents. Srila Gurudeva, please advise me for attend the event. Please give me an idea for attending, Srila Gurudeva. I want blessings from Supreme.

Thank you and Hare Krishna.

Answer: Here's What to Do

First of all try to get your parents to come to the temple with you. If this is not possible and they insist that you stay at home, observe Janmastami at home by spending the whole day fasting (water is okay), reading the pastimes of Krishna from the Krishna Book, cooking a wonderful feast for Krishna, and offering the feast at midnight followed by an arati ceremony and breaking your fast by partaking of the feast. Engage in your parents in doing this along with you.

Devotee of the Devotee

Krishna clearly explains to Arjuna in the Adi-Purana:

ye me bhakta-janah partha
na me bhaktas ca te janah
mad-bhaktanam ca ye bhaktas
te me bhakta-tama matah

"Those who are My direct devotees are actually not My devotees, but those who are the devotees of My servant are factually My devotees."

Therefore if we want to be devotees of Krishna we must become the devotees of a bona fide spiritual master by fully devoting our lives to him.

Question: How to Deal with These Arguments?

Srila Gurudeva, how to deal these arguments from a debate chat on the internet?

Here's what was written on the chat:

Arun:

"How is Krishna's birth anniversary ascertained? 5,244th birth anniversary takes us back to Harappa period (around 2500 to 1750BC). How's this possible? Plus there must have been some geological and archaeological evidence to corroborate this fact. I'm sorry to say. But again it's someone's way to inspire you for buying some of these coins in the name of religion.

"By the way if you go by the so called sastras (scriptures) that period is astonishing. Look at the period of Treta Yuga and the Dwapara Yuga when Krishna is believed to have been born. One more test. Rather an eye opener (at least science background people will believe). Iron was discovered during later Vedic period, around 1,000 BC, but Lord Krishna had witnessed huge battles with swords, daggers n arrows well before that. Just think it over. Read history from research, not from epics and mythology."

Other friend:

"Sab kuchh jhooth hai kya it means..ye mathura and jail jhan paida hue and yamuna jise unhone bhado mas me par kiya tha and all other things surrounding the existence of Lord Krishna."

Arun again:

"I don't want to offend religious people in the group, but your critical thinking will answer everything. Just start asking your queries, which were stifled since your childhood. Think how is it possible that Mahabharata war cud have been fought before 3100 BC (of course prior to the death of Lord Krishna) when even bronze metal discovery was at its nascent stage, let alone the presence of iron. As per recorded and established history, Aryans started moving towards Indo gangetic plains by clearing dense forest in the area with the use of iron axe only after discovery of iron in 1000 BC. You can cross check every fact that I'm presenting.

"Bachpan mein comics padha hoga aapne.... Chacha Choudhary, the super commander Dhurv, nagaraj. They don't really exist but were narrated in alignment with reality, like real places like Delhi and Mumbai were mentioned to make it seem real. And for religion, it makes sense. It serves their purpose. You go there in queue and donate wholeheartedly. Who will do that if there's no imagination or threat of a real God?"

Gurudeva, there are so many nonsense things that he wrote. Kindly make this clear to me..

Shailesh Kumar

Answer: Here's How

To the rascal who is making these points I would say:

What’s your or anyone’s proof that iron was not discovered until 1000BC. Nor you nor any of your authorities were around then to observe this.

Your are believing the materialists and I am believing Krishna and the great acharyas. So you and I are doing the same thing. We are both putting our belief in someone.

I am very pragmatic person. My philosophy is “Truth Works.” By following the materialists I was as miserable as hell and now by following Krishna and the acharyas I am full of bliss. The final test will be at the time of our deaths. Let’s see where you end up and where I end up. Then we can completely put to rest the question of who is right and who is wrong.

For those with a scientific bend of mind regarding when was the appearance of Lord Krishna, the battle of Kurukshetra, etc. we refer to the following points made by the noted scientific researcher, Dr. Richard Thompson, regarding the starting date of Kali-yuga:

"Imagine the following scene: It is midnight on the meridian of Ujjain in India on February 18, 3102 B.C. The seven planets, including the sun and moon, cannot be seen since they are all lined up in one direction on the other side of the earth. Directly overhead the dark planet Rahu hovers invisibly in the blackness of night.

"According to the jyotisa sastras, this alignment of the planets actually occurred on this date, which marks the beginning of the Kali-yuga. In fact, in the Surya-siddhanta, time is measured in days since the start of Kali-yuga, and it is assumed that the positions of the seven planets in their two cycles are all aligned with the star Zeta Piscium at day zero. This star, which is known as Revati in Sanskrit, is used as the zero point for measuring celestial longitudes in the jyotisa sastras. The position of Rahu at day zero is also assumed to be 180 degrees from this star. Nearly identical assumptions are made in other astronomical siddhantas. (In some systems, such as that of Aryabhata, it is assumed that Kali-yuga began at sunrise rather than at midnight. In others, a close alignment of the planets is assumed at this time, rather than an exact alignment.)

"In the Caitanya-caritamrta AL 3.9-10, the present date in this day of Brahma is defined as follows: (1) The present Manu, Vaivasvata, is the seventh, (2) 27 divya-yugas of his age have passed, and (3) we are in the Kali-yuga of the 28th divya-yuga. The Surya-siddhanta also contains this information, and its calculations of planetary positions require knowledge of the ahargana, or the exact number of elapsed days in Kali-yuga. The Indian astronomer Aryabhata wrote that he was 23 years old when 3,600 years of Kali-yuga had passed (BJS, part 2, p. 55). Since Aryabhata is said to have been born in Saka 398, or A.D. 476, this is in agreement with the standard ahargana used today for the calculations of the Surya-siddhanta.

"For example, October 1, 1965, corresponds to day 1,850,569 in Kali-yuga. On the basis of this information one can calculate that the Kali-yuga began on February 18, 3102 B.C., according to the Gregorian calendar. It is for this reason that Vaisnavas maintain that the pastimes of Krishna with the Pandavas in the battle of Kurukshetra took place about 5,000 years ago.

Of course, it comes as no surprise that the standard view of Western scholars is that this date for the start of Kali-yuga is fictitious. Indeed, these scholars maintain that the battle of Kurukshetra itself is fictitious, and that the civilization described in the Vedic literature is simply a product of poetic imagination. It is therefore interesting to ask what modern astronomers have to say about the positions of the planets on February 18, 3102 B.C."

I hope that you find the above points edifying.

Question: Buddhist Nirvana and Krishna Consciousness

Namaskar Gurudeva,

I had couple of questions. Kindly enlighten me from solving these questions for me.

Is achieving nirvana and Krishna consciousness the same thing? If not then what's different? Is either of them superior? Bhagavad-gita says many times that one should focus on the Supreme Personality and only then one will reach the transcendental state where there is no suffering, desire or sense of self and simply be truly happy. Although souls who are practicing Buddhist meditation are focusing on a void they are reaching a state of bliss transcendental to material desires. Is this contradictory?

Richard Browne

Answer: Krishna Consciousness, the Supreme Nirvana

Srila Prabhupada has written:

"By engaging the body, mind, and activities in the service of Krishna, one attains the supreme nirvana, which abides in Krishna.”

So the highest form of nirvana is Krishna consciousness. Buddhists are simply negating matter, but Krishna consciousness goes higher because along with negating matter it affirms the spiritual reality beyond matter.

A mother may instruct her child to stop being naughty without giving him a positive alternative to his naughty behavior by ordering him to sit quietly in the corner of the room. For a few minutes this may work. But soon, because the child’s nature is to be active, he will again be engaged in mischievous activities. But if the mother keeps him engaged in positive activities, his nonsense will naturally not come back again.

So Buddhism is like telling the child to not do anything. And Krishna consciousness is like engaging the child in positive activities. Buddhism may temporarily free one from entanglement in maya. But Krishna consciousness permanently liberates the devotee.

Flood this World with Srila Prabhupada's Books

Srila Prabhupada was in the spiritual world and Krishna ordered him to come to this material and write books. Therefore there is no literature in the world that can be on the same level with Srila Prabhupada's books. If everyone will read Prabhupada's books, this world will be transformed into a paradise. Therefore we must flood this world with Srila Prabhupada's books. We must make them the most popular books in this world.

Question: How Can Krishna Create Billions of Planets?

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada. All glories to you.

How do I understand that unlimited universes which contain unlimited tons of earth, water, fire, etc. all come from a person? How did Krishna create billions of sun's and other gigantic planets? This is inconceivable and bewilders me quite often.

How to have full faith in such miraculous activities?

Name Withheld for confidentiality

Answer: By His Expanded Energies

Since Krishna possesses unlimited power, for Him to do such an amazing feat is no more difficult than picking up His flute and playing a beautiful melody. He does not have to personally manifest all these planets. He does this effortlessly with His expanded energies while He focuses His attention on His loving relationships with His devotees.

If you are willing to take our training, we will teach you how to personally witness how Krishna is doing this, just as Arjuna was able to see it. But you have to fully surrender, just as Arjuna did. Otherwise it will not be possible for these things to be revealed unto you.

Question: Déjà Vu and the Tatastha Region?

Dear Prabhu,

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Hope this meets you in good health and wonderful bhajan. Thank you for your continued support and teachings.

I wanted to ask you about the meaning of déjà vu. Recently I stayed in the Boston Temple and it all seemed already familiar in spite of me being there first time. I'm also getting second thoughts about the origin of soul. I was previously under the impression that we all came from the tatastha region. My personal experience is starting to suggest now that all we need to do is to remember Krishna because we have already been there with Krishna in the spiritual world before falling down to this material world. Please kindly dispel my confusion.

Regards,
Anuradha Devi Dasi

Answer: Previous Life and Our Original Home

When I first went to India in 1980 to attend ISKCON’s Mayapur/Vrindavan Festival I felt strongly that I had returned home. The feeling was so strong that when I returned to America after the festival I was plunged into an ocean of grief feeling great pangs of separation from Lord Krishna’s holy land. And then when I heard my godbrother, Bhajahari Prabhu, describe an amazing pastime of Srila Prabhupada I came to understand that I was an indeed an Indian in my previous birth who had taken birth in the West to assist Srila Prabhupada in his world deliverance mission. This pastime, which took place in London is described by Bhajahari Prabhu as follows:

"Prabhupada talked about ugra-karma and how people had difficult lives, how they worked hard with no result. Revatinandana Swami began to speak about how he used to work in a hellish canning factory in California before he became a devotee. I felt shy and nervous, but I began to talk about how, when I was twenty, I worked in a steel factory for a month. I described it in some detail, the huge hydraulic press and all of our activities. Prabhupada listened carefully. I said, 'Well, Prabhupada, they invited me to make extra money by working the night shift. I thought they had asked me because I was a good worker, but actually nobody else wanted to do it. After one or two weeks of night shift, I nearly had a nervous breakdown from the strain.' Prabhupada said, 'Actually that's because in your last life you were all brahmanas. Otherwise how could you come to the platform of Krishna consciousness so quickly?' He thought for a moment, leaning back on his cushions in a relaxed mood with his hand behind his head, and then said, 'Actually my Guru Maharaja has ordered all of you to take birth to help me spread this mission.' There were about ten of us in the room, and everyone was very attentive at that point. Prabhupada looked at each person and finished on me. He said, 'Now we are all together again,' and beamed. Everybody went 'Jaya, Prabhupada.' Some devotees began to cry.”

Regarding your question about the tatastha region, this term “tatastha region” can be easily misunderstood. Tatastha literally means situated on the border. “Tata” means border and “stha” means "situated." Here’s how Srila Prabhupada describes tatastha using the example of the ocean beach in a lecture he gave in New York on 15 July 1976:

"Tatastha means marginal. That tata, tata means the beach. Sometimes the beach is covered with water and sometimes it is land. That is called tatastha: sometimes land, sometimes water.”

In other words the beach is the border between the ocean and the land. Under the influence of the tides that borderline between the land and the ocean is always moving. What is now on the land in a hour from now can be in the ocean. We the jivas are called tatastha sakti because we have the borderline tendency to be either in the spiritual world or the material world in accordance with the tide of our consciousness. Even though our original home is in the spiritual world with Krishna because we are tatastha sakti there is always a possibility that we can fall into the material world. However if we now take complete shelter of Sri Guru and Sri Krishna it is simply wonderful that in spite of our our tatastha nature we will never fall down again in this hellish material existence.

Today's Thought:

The Most Glorious Day I Went to Jail for Srila Prabhupada

One of my most treasured memories from my 46 years in ISKCON is the time I went to jail for committing the" most heinous crime" of distributing Back To Godhead Magazine. I was distributing Back to Godhead, the world’s greatest magazine, at a parking lot in Leesburg, Florida back in the early 70’s feeling very eager to share Srila Prabhupada’s mercy with the suffering people of Leesburg. A police car pulled up. I was approached by a police officer and immediately put under arrest. In the squad car I was driven to jail and given my new home in a private cell. I was there locked up for 36 hours.

In those days we used to give out prasadam candy when we approached people to warm them up to getting a book or a magazine. I did not eat any jail food. My diet was the prasadam candy that I had with me while distributing. I also used that candy for counting how many rounds I had completed while chanting japa on my fingers. Each time I finished a round I would move a piece of candy from one side of my bunk to the other side of the bunk.

While incarcerated I wrote an essay called “Which Side of the Bars Are You On?” From my perspective there in the jail cell the whole material world was behind the bars and I was on the liberated side. I was feeling quite happy to be doing this austerity on behalf of Srila Prabhupada’s world deliverance mission. On the second day my temple president, Amarendra Prabhu, drove down from Gainesville, Florida and bailed me out of jail. I was not stressed out from being arrested and jailed. Rather I was feeling ecstatic about having gone to jail for Srila Prabhupada.

Question: Help Me to Get Initiated

Dandavat pranam, Gurudeva,

I desire to take initiation from you. Kindly help me.

Jaya Sri Krishna!

Manian

Answer: Here's How

I am very happy that you desire to take initiation. This is the most important step to take for anyone who aspires to get out of this miserable material world by going back to home, back to Godhead.

To become initiated you must be solidly fixed in chanting at least 16 rounds daily of the Hare Krishna mahamantra on japa mala beads along with the strict avoidance of illicit sex, meat eating, intoxication, and gambling. Also you are to only eat Krishna prasadam, foods which have first been offered to Lord Krishna before eating. To help you become familiar with your duties and responsibilities as an initiated disciple, ISKCON provides a Disciples Course, which you also should take.

When you are recommended to me by your local ISKCON leader that you have met these above requirements I will be happy to accept you as my duly initiated disciple. And then I will take full responsibility for delivering you back to home, back to Godhead at the end of your present lifetime.

I Want to Make the Whole World Krishna Conscious

My goal in life is to make the whole world Krishna conscious. Before I leave my present body I want to see that the whole world has become Krishna conscious. This includes and is not limited to leaders in the fields of government, education, business, science, and entertainment. It bothers me greatly to see a world in which so much abuse and cruelty is going on in an overwhelming scale, a world in which everyone is being dragged down to the animal kingdom or even lower in their next lives due to so much uncontrolled sinful activity. Gurudeva, I came to know that you were a Christian before you became Krishna's devotee. When you decided to move to the temple were your family a hurdle? If yes, how did you break this bond of Maya?

Richard

Answer: I Was Already a Renunciate Before Joining ISKCON

I had already renounced my upbringing by become a renunciate hippy on a mission to bring a spiritual revolution to our planet. Moving into the temple was a step up because at that time I was living as a vagabond on the street. Moving into the temple gave me a steady place to live.

All respect to you.

All of my family tell me that everyone of my friends, cousins and other relatives are earning so much wealth, they have got so much reputation in the society, so why don't you aspire to do something and reduce Krishna consciousness? How should I reply to them so that I can give a tight slap to them by using words?

Answer: Material Success is Only Temporary

Tell them that all of these achievements are temporary. They will end when the body dies today or tomorrow. Therefore only fools and rascals dedicate their lives for these things. Therefore those who are intelligent focus their energies on attaining that goal which gives permanent rewards, returning back to home, back to Godhead, back to the spiritual world.

Krishna promises us that for those who surrender He will preserve what they have and provide whatever they lack. So there is absolutely nothing to lose by surrendering to Krishna except for our anxiety and absolutely everything to gain. Therefore who is that fool who will not surrender fully to Krishna?

Question: Could a Monkey Have Written the Bhagavad-gita?

Thank you, Gurudeva, for taking out the time out of your schedule and understanding me. I have another question:

Suppose there are unlimited monkey and each monkey has a typewrite. So there are unlimited typewriters as well. Wouldn't at some point a monkey come up with the script of the Bhagavad-gita? My point I am trying to get at is: How do we know that the Vedic scriptures like Bhagavad-gita is not just another book written by a pseudo spiritual person?

Richard Browne

Answer: Stealing Bananas--Yes. Writing the Gita--No.

While monkeys are good at stealing bananas, a monkey would not be able to randomly produce the Bhagavad-gita. We know the Bhagavad-gita is bona fide because by following it we escape our enslavement in the cycle of birth and death and wake up in our original home in the spiritual world.

Today's Thought:

One Pure Devotee Can Deliver the Whole World

Srila Prabhupada explains as follows in his purport to Srimad Bhagavatam, Canto 2, Chapter 8, Text 5:

"It is said that a single pure devotee of the Lord can deliver all the fallen souls of the world. Thus one who is actually in the confidence of a pure devotee like Narada or Sukadeva Gosvami and thus is empowered by one's spiritual master, as Narada was by Brahmaji, can not only deliver himself from the clutches of maya, or illusion, but can deliver the whole world by his pure and empowered devotional strength. The comparison to the autumnal rain that falls on muddy reservoirs of water is very appropriate. During the rainy season, all the waters of the rivers become muddy, but in the month of July-August, the autumn season, when there is a slight rainfall, the muddy waters of the rivers all over the world become at once clear. By addition of some chemical, a small reservoir of water like that of a metropolitan waterworks tank can be cleared, but by such a tiny effort it is not possible to clear up all the reservoirs of water like the rivers. A powerful pure devotee of the Lord, however, can deliver not only his personal self but also many others in his association.

"In other words, the cleansing of the polluted heart by other methods (like the culture of empiric knowledge or mystic gymnastics) can simply cleanse one's own heart, but devotional service to the Lord is so powerful that it can cleanse the hearts of the people in general, by the devotional service of the pure, empowered devotee. A true representative of the Lord like Narada, Sukadeva Gosvami, Lord Caitanya, the six Gosvamis and later Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura and Srimad Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, etc., can deliver all people by their empowered devotional service."

After understanding these sublime teachings of Srila Prabhupada, the sincere disciple dedicates his life to becoming a spotlessly pure devotee empowered to deliver the entire world from the darkness of the Age of Kali by flooding the entire world with a tidal wave of super-ecstatic pure love of God.

Srila Prabhupada's wonderful point is confirmed in the Sri Caitanya-caritamrita as follows:

sastra-yuktye sunipuna, drdha-sraddha yanra
‘uttama-adhikari’ se taraye samsara

“One who is expert in the Vedic literature and has full faith in the Supreme Lord is an uttama-adhikari, a first-class Vaisnava, a topmost Vaisnava who can deliver the whole world and turn everyone to Krishna consciousness.”--Cc. Madhya 22.65

Question: How to Win the War Against Maya?

Please accept my humble obeisances onto your lotus feet, Guru Maharaja!

I am in a constant war with myself and with the surrounding modern culture, which is accepted as very much normal by everyone. I want to just dive into Krishna consciousness, but I find it very difficult as if something is holding me back always making its impossible for me to reach Krishna. Please guide me, show me the direction to the path that I should walk. Please bestow your mercy on me and keep me under your shelter!

Your servant,

Anamika Roy

Answer: Fight Harder

I am very happy to hear about your war. You are having difficulty because you are not fighting hard enough. If you beg Krishna to help you win the war against maya and try your very best to always remember Krishna, you will be victorious just as Arjuna was victorious on the Battlefield of Kurukshetra by taking complete shelter of Krishna.

Five Years, Eleven Months and a Lifetime of Unexpected Love

Being bedridden with a herniated disc has been a blessing in disguise. It has given me the opportunity to read a most wonderful book by my dear godsister, Visakha Dasi. Reading her book, "Five Years, Eleven Months and a lifetime of unexpected love”, has been the most wonderful, exhilarating experience for me. Visakha Dasi takes us not only on a mystical journey to spiritual India. She takes even more amazingly into the inner regions of her psyche as she undergoes the most astoundingly transformational metamorphosis of all: spiritual awakening. This book will remain as one of the greatest treasures in my personal library. I will always remember and reflect on her most wondrous experience and what I can learn from her for achieving my own perfection of consciousness.

Question: How to Get Back on Track?

Gurudeva, how do you deal with distractions? You've been following spirituality over 40 years, and I am guessing from own experience that it has not always been a smooth glide. Were there any strong stimuli which interrupted your practice, and if yes, how did you get back on track?

Richard Browne

Answer: Pray this Most Powerful Prayer

The strongest distraction of all is sex desire. A great sage name Yamunacarya has given us a powerful prayer to pull the mind away from sex desire. Here it is:

yad-avadhi mama cetah krsna-padaravinde
nava-nava-rasa-dhamany udyatam rantum asit
tad-avadhi bata nari-sangame smaryamane
bhavati mukha-vikarah susthu nisthivanam ca

"Since my mind has been engaged in the service of the lotus feet of Lord Krishna, and I have been enjoying an ever new transcendental humor, whenever I think of sex life with a woman, my face at once turns from it, and I spit at the thought."

Question: How to Intensity Faith?

How to intensity faith?

Ishan Das and Uttara Devi Dasi

Answer: Follow These Instructions

I am very pleased by your question because there is nothing more important than faith. Faith is the very foundation of the process of Krishna consciousness. Without faith one is nowhere, and with strong faith one advances rapidly on the pathway of Krishna consciousness. The first thing is to understand the absolute necessity of strong faith. Then one should fervently beg for it every day by sincerely chanting the Hare Krishna with as much focus as one can muster. In this way, by regular focused chanting one's faith will grow steadily, and one will gradually attain the perfectional stage of pure devotional service.

If Something is Auspicious, Do It Immediately

There is nothing more auspicious than to fully surrender yourself to Krishna right now. So why delay it?  If something is auspicious, it should be done immediately or as soon as it is possible or practical.  Otherwise we are simply wasting our time prioritizing those things which are ultimately not that important and spoiling our human form of life.

Question: How to Become a Brahmana?

Dear Srila Gurudeva!

Please accept my humble obeisances in the dust of Your lotus feet.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

Srila Gurudeva! A year ago you gave me instruction: "Become a brahmana!" I see how many bad qualities I have, and the qualities of the brahmana are very sublime. Sometimes I think that I can not correct my low qualities. I pray Krishna to help me become worthy of my spiritual master. Please tell me, what should I do to become a Vaisnava brahmana?

With respect,

Your servant,

Arjuna das

Answer: Follow These Instructions

If you will chant at least 16 rounds of Hare Krishna japa mala every day and strictly avoid illicit sex, meat eating, intoxication, and gambling, you will naturally become a Vaisnava brahmana.

Question: Why Do We Sometimes Lose Interest in Chanting?

Haribol!

Please accept my humble obeisances, Guru Maharaja!

Why do we sometime lose interest to do our chanting?? How can we overcome such lack of enthusiasm? Please guide me!

Your servant!
Anamika

Answer: Unconquered Material Tendency

Because the neophyte devotee has not yet fully conquered over his tendency for material sense gratification he may sometimes relapse into material consciousness even while chanting the Hare Krishna mahamantra. The solution for this is to forcibly bring the wandering mind back to Krishna whenever this occurs. In this way one will gradually become habituated to always being Krishna conscious and the mind will no longer deviate him from the path of Krishna consciousness.
